migrate my domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to migrate my domain to WordPress. Also my webpage is quite old, I want to redesign it with WordPress template myself. I just need a simple webpage with 1-2 email addresses, in fact it already got it in my old site. Anyone can suggest me how to do is the best way. Thanks.

  • Is your old site a WordPress site? Or was it built with a different site builder?

We have instructions for transferring a domain to WordPress.com here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Let us know if anything is unclear or you have any further questions.

    Hi rootjosh,
Thanks for your prompt reply and the link too. I need some advices after I read the info, as below.
    a. I believe my old is very OLD, maybe older than WordPress:) I think my builder used other software- I can’t ask him as I lost him too. The information in my old site needs update, so I can let go the whole site.
    b. I am a graphic designer and illustrator, so I think I can manage the template. Only is I want my email address moves seamlessly while migrating. I don’t want to loss any emails. Can I sign up with WordPress using one of your simple template as a start (I can modify later) and setup email address, then I migrate my domain from my old provider to WordPress to host? and how long will it take to do so?
    c. Lastly, regarding ‘Unlock your domain’, when is the right time to contact my current provider to unlock my domain? As they also manage my site? Before or after I signed up with WordPress with plan?
Apology if I am not clear. Looking forward to hear from you. Thanks.
    Regards.

  • a) I’m not sure what your question is here :)

If you’re asking how to migrate the content, that really depends on exactly what system the current site is set up with. Can you give us the URL of the current site, and some details on what platform it’s built with?

    b) Who is your current email provider? Is your domain provider also your email provider, or is your email hosted somewhere else?

If your email is hosted somewhere else, you’ll need to follow these steps:

    1) Upgrade your WordPress.com site to a paid plan, and add a domain mapping upgrade for your domain first: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    2) Add the DNS records required for your email to work to the domain here on WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/

    3) Point the domain’s name servers to us.

    4) Start the domain transfer.

If you do the steps in this order, any downtime to your email should be minimal.

If your domain provider is also your email provider, and your email is tied to your domain registration, then transferring your domain registration will likely also cancel your email hosting. You’ll need to contact your current provider to make sure of that.

In that case you’ll need to migrate your email to another provider first, before you can transfer the domain to us. For that you’ll need to chat with your current email provider, and the new one you’ll be moving to, for the best process to follow there.

    c) Pointing your domain’s name servers to us (step 3 above) and starting the transfer (step 4) should come last, only after you’ve migrated your content to your new site with us, and once you’re ready to take the current site completely offline.

Meanwhile you can set up your site using the free example.wordpress.com address we provide. If you want features from a paid plan you can even upgrade the plan already, and add the domain mapping upgrade so you can start setting up the domain’s DNS and email, all while the domain is still registered at your current provider and pointing to the current site.

Hi, Thanks for the details and sorry for not clear.
    1. I don’t need to migrate the content from my old site, I only want to migrate my domain name with my email address which links with my domain. I want totally out of my current provider, no mapping. (so doesn’t matter what software was the builder, right?)
    2. I will use one of your template be my new webpage (as a start) and keep my email address which link with my domain. Am I going to setup the same old email address again after I migrate to WordPress?
    3. Do I have to contact my current domain (and hosting) provider to unlock my domain for the migration, said in your link (https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/)?? If yes, when I should do it?
I hope I make myself clearer now, thanks a lot.
    Regards.

  • 1) If you’re not migrating your content, then that doesn’t matter, no.

    2) Am I going to setup the same old email address again after I migrate to WordPress?

I gave you the steps you need to follow above. If there’s a specific aspects of those steps that you don’t understand, let me know, but I’m not sure what more I can tell you beyond what I’ve already said.

Your email isn’t intrinsically linked to your domain, and moving your domain won’t automatically move your email. Your domain is provided by your domain registrar, and your email is provided by an email provider. Those two can be the same company, or they can be different companies, but these are two separate services that you’ll need to move separately.

You cannot migrate your email to us, because we are not an email provider. We are just a reseller for Google Workspace and for Titan email, meaning you can buy email hosting with either of those providers through us, but you’ll need to work with the provider directly to migrate your current email archive over to them.

What template/theme you use for the site you create with us has nothing to do with your email or your domain. That simply affects the appearance of your website.

    3. Do I have to contact my current domain (and hosting) provider to unlock my domain for the migration

Yes, as only your current domain provider can unlock the domain and provide you with a transfer code.

If yes, when I should do it?

You’ll need to do this before you submit the domain transfer code on our end to start the transfer, as explained in our support page.
