Migrate older site to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

NEWBE Here: I want to migrate an existing site to WordPress and Course Vector as the hosting. I would like to build a test or development site first and then publish to the final production level site. 1: Not sure if any tools to help migrate existing, or do I have to rebuild it completely ? 2: What do I need to do to move the domain over and at what point to I move it (want to keep old site till new one is completely ready and tested) ?

  • Hi there!

It sounds as though you’re looking for the self-hosted WordPress.org whereas you’ve landed here on the WordPress.com forums, which is for the managed hosting solution.

You can see the differences here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

To get the best response for your requirements I would recommend either reaching out to your current host or using the WordPress.org forums here:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

I hope that helps to point you in the right direction :)

  • @wpday11 I just want to add, your host can likely help you with the domain questions and staging (setting up a site to replace the live one, and sorting out how and when to switch over).

And, while these import resources apply mostly to sites on our managed hosting services, you can likely find similar options for a self-managed copy of WordPress with another host:
    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

Good luck, and welcome to WordPress!
