Migrate site

I have a wordpress site that I want to migrate to GoDaddy, where I have purchased a domain. When I type the domain into GoDaddy it tells me the site is already being hosted by wordpress. How do I stop wordpress from hosting this site?

    Hello there,

Can you please share the URL of the site you want to migrate and the domain you have purchased? Thank you.

    Domain name: athlegal.ca

    Hello again,

The domain you bought from GoDaddy (athlegal.ca) is being mapped to your WordPress website (athlegal376819040.wordpress.com). But since your WordPress website is hosted on the free plan, that will not work.

To be able to map a custom domain to your free WordPress.com website you will need to upgrade to one of the paid plans. You can read more about this here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/#getting-started-with-domain-mapping

If you want to migrate your website to GoDaddy and not just map the domain to your current website, then you will also need to pay for a hosting plan at a company of your choice.

Please let me know if you have any more questions regarding this.

Alright, if the issue is happening at GoDaddy I believe contacting them will get you more adequate support.

You can learn how to migrate a website to a self hosted WordPress installation by reading this guide we created specifically for this purpose:
    https://move.wordpress.com/

GoDaddy also has a few guides about moving websites to their hosting:
    https://www.godaddy.com/help/move-my-wordpress-site-automatically-8997
    https://www.godaddy.com/garage/migrating-wordpress/

    Hope this helps!

It’s also worth noting that the domain you mentioned earlier (athlegal.ca) is configured to “point” to your WordPress.com site and not the hosting you have purchased at GoDaddy, so that might be what is causing the confusion.

GoDaddy support told me to contact Worpress support because the reason the site cannot be migrated is because WordPress is currently hosting the site “athlegal376819040.wordpress.com”. I apologize because I don’t really know what this all means. I just want the website that I made on WordPress to be connected to the domain I purchased. The alternative seems to be re-making the site on Godaddy’s WordPress app but that is proving to be very difficult

the reason the site cannot be migrated is because WordPress is currently hosting the site “athlegal376819040.wordpress.com”

This does not matter. You can host two of the same websites in different places and it makes no difference.

The guide below shows you how to migrate your WordPress.com website ( athlegal376819040.wordpress.com ) to GoDaddy’s WordPress app. This should be able to be done without any issues no matter who is hosting what:
    https://move.wordpress.com/exportimport-content/

Once you export from WordPress.com and import it to your GoDaddy WordPress installation, you will have the same site in both places.

It’s also worth noting that the domain you mentioned earlier (athlegal.ca) is configured to “point” to your WordPress.com site and not the hosting you have purchased at GoDaddy, so that might be what is causing the confusion.

If you visit athlegal.ca you can see that the URL changes to a .wordpress domain. What this means is that the domain athlegal.ca is configured to “point” to your WordPress.com website, and that is the only thing that can be causing the error.

Once you migrate athlegal376819040.wordpress.com to your new hosting plan on GoDaddy, then you can talk to their support about configuring the domain athlegal.ca to the new hosting plan and not to your current WordPress.com site.

I will also flag this post so that a staff member sees it and is perhaps able to provide a clearer explanation.

  • Hi,

I just want the website that I made on WordPress to be connected to the domain I purchased. The alternative seems to be re-making the site on Godaddy’s WordPress app but that is proving to be very difficult

The easiest way to do that is to keep the site hosted here. You would just add a plan and mapping: http://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

To host the site at GoDaddy instead, you’ll need to do a few things:

    1. Create a new site on their services. These tips can help you move your content over: https://move.wordpress.com

    2. Update your domain to point to GoDaddy. They registered your domain and can help you change its settings.

Let us know if you need more help with this.
