Migrate to WordPress from Ning
-
I can not find how to do this…I have a blog on the Ning platform…but want to migrate the whole thing to use the WordPress platform, but for a URL I already own. Thus, I know I won’t be able to buy it and have WordPress host it for $18 a year, because I already own. I am willing to move to one of their approved hosting parties, but I need help. I would like to hire someone at WordPress to help me…but I can’t find that option, or any contact information. Help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s not that complicated.
Here is the info on the Import: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/
Here is the info on using your domain with a WP.com blog: http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

I have looked at http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/ before…but it does not include how to migrate from Ning.

It looks like Ning exports their content as a json file, which is not supported on WordPress.com.
To be honest, though, the content on Ning isn’t really just a simple blog, but more like a forum, so it’s not really an apples to apples kind of thing.
If you wish to use WordPress.com for your new site, you will need to create a new blog and copy/paste the content you wish to keep from Ning. Alternately it looks like you could set up a BuddyPress installation on a self-hosted site and use this plugin to import the content there: http://wordpress.org/plugins/import-from-ning/faq/ That’s not something we could assist you with here, but if you want to learn more about BuddyPress, go to https://buddypress.org/

Hey, I know Ning is quite different…but tired of their draconian price structure. I did read about BuddyPress, but it doesn’t look that easy. I’m not a total ludite, but was hoping to hire someone.

That’s entirely understandable, but we can’t really assist you with finding a BuddyPress developer here. I’d recommend looking around locally to see if you have a WordPress community, and if so, see if anyone there has experience with BuddyPress in particular. There are also support forums on the link I provided above that may be helpful.
