Migrate to WordPress.org who no longer accepts XML and WordPress.com has no FTP
-
I decided on self hosting for my artwork site to take advantage of plug-ins not available on wp.com. Exported XML okay but now wp.org is afraid of XML. Chat with wp.org says use files. But now FTP unavailable on wp.com
“To clarify your concern Greg, unfortunately, with the recent security updates, the .xml file extension has been blocked from the server for security concerns and the safety of the server. It is recommended to try other file types while importing files. On the shared server we will not be able to allow the .xml file and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

That sounds challenging! SFTP is available with the Business plan or higher.
Since it sounds like you are planning to host your site on a different platform outside of WordPress.com, we’re limited in the support we can provide for using the other platform.
You could try using the Studio by WordPress.com app – https://developer.wordpress.com/studio/ and import the XML file to a local site on your computer. Then use a plugin such as All-in-One WP Migration to create a backup of the local site which may be able to be used to restore to the chosen platform. Beyond that, you’ll want to ask your new host what other options they can provide.
