Migrate Website from Institutional WordPress to My Own Domain
-
I am a graduate student, and I currently have a website hosted on my university’s institutional WordPress (http://levyb.web.unc.edu/). When I graduate, this website will be deleted, so I would like to migrate my site in advance to avoid a rocky changeover period.
I have new domain (hosted currently in my separate squarespace account) which at the moment I am just redirecting to my existing site. In the future, I would like to have this new domain be the home of my new (migrated) website.
As you can see here ( http://levyb.web.unc.edu/homework-help/pathria/ ) the potentially complicated things about my website are that 1) it contains a lot of links to PDFs, and 2) it contains LaTeX. I have attempted to migrate my website to squarespace, but the process did not go smoothly (because I couldn’t figure out how to make either of these work).
How challenging would it be for me to migrate my website to WordPress given these particular issues? Is there a way to get started without paying for a lot of money up front, just to see if it’s going to work?

Hi –
The first step is to figure out if you want to use the open source WordPress.org software, or our managed hosting at WordPress.com.
WordPress.com includes your domain fee, hosting, and access to our support team 24/7 + some other great features like built in SEO.
The site can be cloned with a plugin and moved seamlessly that way. It would require a business plan on WordPress.com but depending on the volume and intricacies of the site it may be worth that expense. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Otherwise, you can import directly on WordPress.com. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
