Migrated from self-hosted WP to WP.com, how to export images?

  • Unknown's avatar

In the last few days I’ve managed to move my blog from a self-hosted WP installation, to WP.com (zave.wordpress.com). Unfortunately, lots of images got lost in the process. Actually, my blog imported everything keeping the old images url (i.e. http://zave.dailyrando.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/example.jpeg). I’ve exported all the contents with the standard WP tool (Tools -> Export). Can anybody help me?

    Hi there,

As long as your original WordPress.org site is still up and running with the original URL still pointing at it; the importer tool will follow each media URL, download the file, and then adjust the URL to point to the now-local file.

If your old site is up at all, I would recommend re-importing your site so that it has a chance to grab all of your media content. If it is not, you will need to add each image individually and correct the URLs in your posts to point to the correct address within your blog.

Hi and thanks for your reply. My old site has been up for two days after the migration/import, but the import tool did nothing with the images :
Now the old blog is down and manually adjust hundreds of images it seems to me like a long trip to hell :D
If I manage to get up the old site and re-import everything, will it duplicate the posts and pages?

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi there,

It should not duplicate the entries which are already there, as the importer is designed to skip those entries which are already there.

If for some reason, by skipping the duplicate entries, it also skips updating the URLs, you can empty your blog and reimport all of your entries and just try again. You can see how to do so right here:
