Migrating a self hosted site to wordpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I have been managing a self-hosted site for several years now. I am finding this getting more and more tedious and time-consuming. I am entertaining the idea of signing up for a Personal Plan. I am currently hosted by Hostgator and my domain is registered at GoDaddy. My site is bilingual (English & French) through the functionality of the Polylang Plugin. My present theme is Divi, but I find that through the years it has become slow and bloated.
What are my options? Can my domain name be transferred over to WordPress.org?
Can the bilingual functionality be preserved? How and with which plugin?
Can my present site be transferred over to the WordPress.org or do I have to rebuild?
Rebuilding would make a fresh start and I am prepared to do it, but having the bilingual functionality is a large part in my decision.
Please advise, what you would recommend I do.
My current domain name is .

Many thanks, looking forward to working with you.

  • Hi there,

What are my options? Can my domain name be transferred over to WordPress.org?

I believe you mean WordPress.com. And yes, you can transfer your domain here. Here’s how to do it:

Can the bilingual functionality be preserved? How and with which plugin?

You can use the same plugin, but you’ll have to upgrade to the Business or eCommerce plan. Only those two plans allow the installation of plugins.

Can my present site be transferred over to the WordPress.org or do I have to rebuild?

Yes, you can transfer it. We have put together a step-by-step guide for this:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Thank you fstat !!!

I think I will rebuild from scratch since I find thta Divi is simply too slow and bloated.

Can you just tell me if I am going to proceed in the correct order:

Sign up for a Personal Plan on wordpress.com
    Choose a theme
Build up both blog posts and image galleries
As a last step transfer domain from GoDaddy to wordpress.com

Couple more questions: for a photography gallery and blog, I would need the flexibility of building both pages and posts. In other words, a page called “Blog” would aggregate automatically the blog posts as summaries/excerpts, as I am doing currently with the Divi Theme. Is there a theme that incorporates a “Guestbook” ? Or is that through a plugin available on wordpress.com ?

Thnak you for the excellent support response time.

    Yes.
    – Add your plan from https://wordpress.com/pricing/
    – Browse themes at https://wordpress.com/themes/
    – Connect the domain https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

In other words, a page called “Blog” would aggregate automatically the blog posts as summaries/excerpts,

By default your posts are going to publish on the front page, that’s the first page folks see when they come to your site. That can be customized though and you can instead choose to publish those posts on a page titled “blog” that is linked in the site menu. See here:

    Set the Homepage

There are several options for creating post excerpts. Some themes have this built in functionality right out of the box. The easiest option is to customize it with a Read More Tag or the Read More Block.

    More Block

Can you tell me more about Guestbook and the functionality you want to incorporate?

    Thanks for the additional info.

By “Guestbook”, I meant a page on which visitors can sign and leave comments about the site, blog post or images.

You can see the current guestbook here:
    https://christianfritschi.com/guestbook/

It is powered by a plugin I found here:

    Gwolle Guestbook

  • We don’t specifically have a Guestbook option, but you can have comments on any post or page, so you could just create a page called Guestbook. :) https://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/
