Migrating a site

  I used to blog here on WordPress, and in the year or two that I’ve been ‘on break,’ I started a website through wix.com. I think I would like to migrate that site here–but I want to keep my url and my email address that I have through them. How do I do this?

  Hi there,

  At the time I wrote that answer I wasn’t a Happiness Engineer yet, but it is still accurate. Wix doesn’t offer an export file that will work at WordPress.com, so if you want to move your content you’ll first need to export it to a service that allows RSS imports, and then export it from there in a format that will work on WordPress.com.

  Wix also doesn’t allow you to map your domain to another hosting provider, so you’ll first need to transfer your domain away from them to a registrar like Tucows or GoDaddy, and then map your domain here using the instructions @eallas provided. It’s not possible at present to completely transfer your domain to us.

  Okay, so I got my domain away from wix and safely over to godaddy. It currently points to godaddy’s “parked nameservers.” Then I came over here to create a new blog/site. I chose “Personal” for now, and entered my domain into the “already own a domain” field, but every time I hit “enter,” it just returns to the same screen. The only error message is, “! Please enter a site name” in a red bar.

  Help? :-/

  Are you trying to add that domain to a brand new site? In that case, pick the Personal Plan, but on the domain step only select a free domain for now.

  Once the site is set up, go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and select the Map It option. Then you can add your domain to connect it to the new site. More detailed instructions on adding mapping here:
