Migrating a site from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

We are looking into options for our site, and are exploring migrating the site from wordpress.com to wordpress.org so that we can have more control over the back end. What is the process for this?

    Thanks!

This guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

Great thank you. Just to make verify I understand the process, we can set up our same site (since we used a free template on wordpress.com and it looks to be available on wordpress.org as well), and the new site will be hosted with another company. We’d transfer over our wordpress.com info following the above instructions, so that we have control over the backend. We previously hosted with GoDaddy for instance, so we’d be able to host the new site there. Does that sound accurate? Just want to make sure I’m not missing anything from the instructions.

    Thanks!

    That’s pretty much it. :)

You’ll need a domain name to use on GoDaddy, but the rest of that is pretty much it.

You’ll set up WordPress on GoDaddy, export your content from WordPress.com and import it at your GoDaddy site.
