Migrating a website to a self hosted site
-
Hello. I am trying to migrate our website from the WP.com servers to our own servers. We followed the instructions as best we could and had a lot of problems because we are wanting to keep the same domain name. I am wondering if that is even doable, and if it is if the guided migration covers this issue. We want to: migrate the site, apply a new theme, and then move the domain name/DNS so that the website is down for the least amount of time. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi there!
You can definitely use the domain you’ve registered here with a site hosted elsewhere, if that’s what you mean. There are two options for getting that working…
You can keep the domain here and change the name servers to point to your new host following the steps here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/
Or if you want to transfer the domain, there is information on how to do that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
This guide is helpful for working through the steps of moving your site from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress site: https://move.wordpress.com/
Or if you’re interested, there is a Guided Transfer option available for purchase: https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Let me know if you have any questions! :)
