Migrating an Existing Website from GoDaddy

I have an ‘available Managed WordPress credit’ on GoDaddy. On my GoDaddy account, I tried to ‘migrate an existing site’ I created on WordPress, but I noticed it says, ‘Sites hosted by WordPress.com cannot be migrated due to limitations in their hosting, you’ll need to contact their support for help.’ I am wondering if there is any way I can successfully migrate my WordPress site using my WordPress credit on GoDaddy. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

So you’re trying to migrate your WordPress.com site TO GoDaddy, rather than transferring a site from GoDaddy to us, correct?

The Migrate option you see on GoDaddy’s end is for a full-site migration, and that’s not possible for WordPress.com sites. The version of WordPress we use here on WordPress.com is not the same as the version you’ll be using at GoDaddy – our version has modifications to make it work on the specific hosting setup we have here on WordPress.com, and those modifications won’t work with any other hosting provider.

Instead, you can migrate your site’s content only, using the export/import options built into WordPress itself.

First, get an export of your WordPress.com site’s content at Tools ->Export under My Sites.

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/export/

Next, create a new WordPress site on your hosting plan at GoDaddy. Once that site is set up, log into the admin account, and go to Tools ->Import. Click the WordPress option there to install the WordPress importer plugin, and then use that to upload the file you got from us.

For help with the import process on their end, please contact GoDaddy support directly.
