Migrating Away From WordPress.com While Keeping the Quintus Theme

As good as a product as WordPress.com’s hosted copy of WordPress is, I’ve decided it’s rather heavy-weight for my needs. As such, I’ve started the process of migrating my blog from WordPress.com to Jekyll as provided by GitHub Pages. I’ve recovered all my posts and converted them to a format that Jekyll understands already but haven’t yet definitively decided what I’m going to do about the new site’s look and feel as of this writing. I really like the ‘Quintus’ theme that I was using here on WordPress.com and would love to use it at my blog’s new home despite the fact that said theme has apparently been retired, but I’m afraid to admit that, after having taken a look into its source (I checked it out from your SVN repository) and how I might accomplish porting it myself, converting a WordPress theme to a Jekyll one is, at best, a rather non-trivial task of a scope beyond which I’m prepared to tackle at this point that appears, to add insult to injury, to be documented quite poorly. Would anyone on the WordPress.com support team be willing and able to point me towards either better documentation or somebody who could help me do the theme conversion?

  • Hi –

It’s not going to be possible to use your direct theme from WordPress.com. You would need to download or purchase this theme, or a different one, to use on Jekyll.

Quintus is available through the WordPress.org repository:

    Quintus

I understand that I won’t be able to use the theme immediately since it and all other WordPress themes are meant to be used with dynamic sites and Jekyll only generates static content and thus does not support server-side scripting like that used in such themes. I’ve already checked the Quintus theme’s source out from https://wpcom-themes.svn.automattic.com/quintus. What I’m asking for is more resources for use understanding how to convert the theme for use with Jekyll, specifically with respect to converting the theme’s PHP code to Liquid templates and client-ide scripts, probably written in JavaScript, suitable for use on a static site. Like I said in my OP, there doesn’t really seem to be much, if any documentation, on how to do this without finding someone more experienced to do it for you. Perhaps I’ll ask on Jekyll’s Slack channel…

Guess they don’t have one. I found their Discourse, though, so I posted something there (here‘s that if you want to follow along.)
