Migrating Domains

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently joined Bluehost and am trying to merge my existing domain with WordPress.com onto Bluehost but I first need to migrate it to wordpress.org but it’s not letting me. It appears that I’m missing some things on my sidebar. I’ve tried exporting but it wont export into the right format. I’m not really sure how else to download to files.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi jlama16

Do you want to migrate your WordPress.com site julielama.wordpress.com on Bluehost ?

Here is the link for support document that will help you out in exporting your content:

    Hope this help.

    Hi,

Thanks but I have tried this a few times and it won’t save the file in the right format.

  • Hi there,

What format are you expecting? WordPress.com exports can only be a single .xml export file, or a .zip folder containing several .xml files, and you get that file by going to My Site ->Settings ->Export and clicking the export button.

That file then has to be imported at WP-Admin ->Tools ->Import ->WordPress on the new site. This is only done after you install the WordPress software at your hosting provider and create an admin user for the site.

If Bluehost is asking you for a .sql database file, or .php and .css files to upload directly to their servers, that is not possible, as a WordPress.com site cannot be migrated in that way. That method only works to migrate a site that already self-hosted from one server to another.
