Migrating from GoDaddy + Using CLoudFlare
-
Hi! I’m looking to get away from GoDaddy (been using their ‘hosted WordPress service for a year now) and I was wondering if I went with the $8/mo package straight through WordPress I could do a simple migration and also use CloudFlare with my site to siphon off some of the garbage traffic? This does not work with my GoDaddy site for some reason and they also expect me to pay extra for a SSL cert. I’m ready to switch – please advise!

Hi there,
You can see here for the available options to migrate an existing WordPress site from another hosting provider to WordPress.com:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
We do not support using Cloudflare as a DNS proxy for sites hosted with us. It is possible, but that will prevent us from issuing a SSL certificate for your domain, and our support will not be able to provide assistance with setting up the Cloudflare proxy, nor with any issues that might arise on your site from using that.

Can you tell me why you feel this is necessary?
We have no bandwidth limitations on WordPress.com, so bot traffic cannot cause you to hit a traffic cap after which we charge you extra for traffic.
And our stats service is designed to not record traffic coming from bots and automated traffic referral services.
Additionally all sites hosted on WordPress.com are secured over HTTPS by default, so there’s no reason to use a third-party provider for this.

Hi there Kokkieh!
Thank you so much for the response. You kind of answered your own question actually:“And our stats service is designed to not record traffic coming from bots and automated traffic referral services.”
As it stands on the GoDaddy setup, I can not use CloudFlare and I have a ton of bot traffic that is inflating my stats and making it very hard for me to get my bearings. The site is still very small, but it is important that I get the data I do have as distilled as I possibly can – that and the SSL. GoDaddy charges like an extra $100/yr for that, and while you can use CF for that I am not able to change nameservers on the GoDaddy service.
That – plus there have been many, many, many times when I go to the site and I get a “gateway” error and it fails to load. When I refresh (or refresh in an incognito tab) it usually loads up, but still… this is making me think first time viewers are not getting the actual site on a regular basis.
You think migrating would solve these issues and help me get to a point where I could grow?
SIDE QUESTION: If I wanted to host a second site here as well, what would my monthly fee go to? What about 3 sites? (I’m currently just looking at the $8/mo plan for all three but can you host multiple sites on a package deal?)
THANK YO SO MUCH!!

Bot traffic inflating your stats shouldn’t be a problem on WordPress.com, as our stats are specifically designed to ignore those. And SSL is included by default and for free.
It’s also very unlikely that you’ll be suffering from the gateway errors as you describe above. Those are often caused by misconfigured servers, but we manage that for you entirely on WordPress.com, and I’ve run into those types of errors maybe a handful of times in eight years of hosting sites on WordPress.com.
So based on what you’ve said in this thread, it does sound like moving to our hosting might solve the issues you’re currently experiencing.

We don’t currently offer multi-site plans, so you’d need to buy a separate plan for each site you wished to upgrade.
However, you can also host an unlimited number of sites on our free plan – a paid plan is only required if you want to use your own domain rather than the free example.wordpress.com address we provide, or if you want access to our other paid features.

Great – thank you so much! I’m going to make the switch – any suggestions on where I should start in regards to migrating content in one fell swoop??
Thanks again, really appreciate it!

In this case, I recommend starting with https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
