migrating from KNOL
-
I think, there are all dead in the Knol department, but maybe there are some walking deads ?
Macmanx, what do you think about my idea of having a tool to import .mht ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
-
We have some direct connections. If we can’t get this figured out through them, we’ll see what we can do about those export files, but I can’t make any promises yet.
-
sure, I was not asking for ‘promises’
I was just insisting on this file format, which very few people happen to know, and it’s a pity because it’s very smart
(this situation probably comes from everybody fleeing IE ???)
anyway, it would be good to have a working tool of some sort : yesterday, I was transferring by hand one of my knols, it takes a long long time because of the images, you have to save them in your computer, and them to upload them in WPress, and each time you want to set the caption, WordPress makes the browser (I have tried Chrome and Coolnovo aswell) CRASH !
so yesterday, my browser crashed like 7 times
have a good day

Regarding the caption, are you setting it before or after you insert the image into the post?
Images can be edited and the caption added after inserting, so you might want to try that if you’re just adding the caption before inserting.
-
as you may know, you can’t put the caption when you upload the pic, because the field is a “description” (in french in fact, in english not sure)and will not appear (I was putting my text in it a lot of time before discovering it was not a place for the caption)
then the image appears in the page, you edit it a second time and now you can see the “caption” (in french : légende) and fill it
it is when doing this second action that the thing usually crashes, a variant is that the caption will not appear, even if you fill it again and again
-
There are two ways to add a caption:
1. Before the first insert, right after uploading: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/#upload-images-from-your-computer
2. By editing the image in the post or Media Library after inserting: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/
Which one are you doing?
-
thanks, I know the two ways :
in the first menu, it never worked for me, probably I was filling “description” instead of “default caption” ?
usually, the second manner works, but very often, it crashes my browser, and also sometimes, the caption will not appear, even if I retry and retry
-
OK, when filling “default caption” it works, thanks, but the presence of this “description” field is confusing.

-
Very good, I like the way you handle feedback, it changes me a lot from Google, Knol was a real feedback nightmare
-
You’re welcome!
We should hopefully be hearing back from Google soon. Worse-case scenario, we can manually import from your export file, but the redirect (your Knol to your WordPress.com blog) will need to be done on Google’s end.
-
Hi, it’s not a worst case scenario, it would be very good ! doing the redirect manualy is fine ! The boring part is to transfert the pictures, and the vidéos one by one!
Thanks for your time
-
Just in case Google can’t help us, I’m going to send an email to the email address on your account. Once you receive it, would you please reply with your export files attached?

-
no, the upload limit in gmail is 25 MB, sorry
yes I will Dropbox it this evening, sorry I’m leaving for work
have you received the small one ?
thanks a lot
-
Yep, I have the small one. Feel free to send the other one via Dropbox, Usendit, etc when you can.
-
I just wanted to let you know that we have heard back from Google, and they are moving the request to a different department now that they know what the issue is.
So, at least there is some movement.
-
Hi J. thanks for this following; Oh, they have different departments, walking deads, zombies, vampires ?
What I plan to do now is to create a number of pages, with just the title of my ex-knols in WordPress, and set the redirections, I will fill them one by one later, when I have time.
Do you think I can create those “empty” pages with no trouble ?
regards
