Migrating from personal server runnging WordPress

  Hi,

  I have been running my own server for 5 or 6 years, but I am finally tiring of it. I have already started migrating various parts of it such as mail for some domains, web pages, etc.

  I have started looking around at migrating two blogs I run on WordPress. The natural choice is to come to wordpress.com, but I am open to any other suggestions, including iweb (both users have macs and .mac), blogger, etc.

  Neither user wants to lose the years of posts they have written, so I definitely need some kind of export from what I have and import to the new location.

  I took a quick shot at exporting wordpress on my server and importing on wordpress.com, and all the posts and comments are there… But all the images are still on the old server. Is there anyway to migrate all of that as well?

  Can you not hotlink from the old server? If you are unable to do that then yes, you’ll have to re-upload the images, either to a third-party site like Flickr or Photobucket or to WP.com. If you are able to hotlink, then the code you have should work, provided you haven’t set the old blog to Private.

  If you have embedded media like YouTubes, etc, those, too, will need to be adapted, as we have some security restrictions here. Hopefully you tagged them accordingly so you can swoop through and do them all at once without sifting through your entire archive.

  Well I actually started an export from my server to an import here, and it all looks pretty good… Images are on the old server and load fine. But at some point, I want the old server to go away, so I would need to move them all. I was hoping there was some automatic way to do that, rather than go in and edit each post.

  Not currently. People have certainly been requesting it, though, so hopefully it’s on the development radar.

  Hmm, is there at least a way to bulk transfer images from my server to a “folder” on wordpress.com for my blog, so I don’t have to move it image by image, but instead just edit the references?

  I should have fully read the link you gave me, as that is the answer. Not what I was hoping for, but at least it is answered!

  :-(

  So, if wordpress.com can’t do it, are there any other blogging platforms that can?

  You’d have to ask somewhere else, since we’re all by definition WP.com bloggers.
