Migrating from WordPress 2.1.3
-
I have this Network Solutions site hosted on WordPress 2.1.3: pa.savinggracelc.org
I would like to migrate to my new Revaugie.wordpress.com site, but the 2.1.3 xml export file is incompatible.
Can you help?

Is there any chance that you could upgrade your copy of WordPress before exporting the file?
-
I think that the Network Solutions option is just to “reinstall this installation” or something like that. That sounds drastic. I may try this as a last resort. But it seems interesting that WordPress used to produce this XML file as part of the “export” process, but now it’s not at all supported.
-
Well, the current version of WordPress is 3.2.1, so 2.1.3 is quite a bit far behind.
Can you try updating it?
-
I was hoping that Network solutions would have an automatic update option, unfortunately …
they directed me to:
1. Back-up the contents of your service including your database …
2. Access your WordPress Administration panel
3. On the left hand menu click Dashboard then Updates
4. In the center it will list the WordPress version available and other Plug-in updates available. Click Update Automatically next to the WordPress version.
The next screen will show the progress and a successful completion message once completed. However, there is no “Updates” option on the 2.1.3 Dashboard … so I’m pretty much on my own.
Before I do the upgrade that you directed me to ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended ) … perhaps you can tell me the oldest version that will accomplish a compatible export. Since I am not actually trying to upgrade the installation for viewing (I plan to delete this installation once I get the export, and then import the data into my wordpress.com hosted blog) I want to do the easiest upgrade possible, export my data and be done.
Thanks for all your help!

I’d try 3.0 first, though officially I can only offer support for export files from the latest version (3.2.1).
-
I also noted in the documentation that I can’t go right from 2.1.3 to 3.2.1
Can you recommend a migration path? There are LOTS of releases between 2.1.3 and 3.2.1.
I’d like to make as few installs as possible, to limit problems.
Plus the instructions are only shown for migrating to 3.2.1. Where could I find instructions to go from 2.1.3 to 2.2 or 2.5 for example?
Appreciate all the help. Thanks!

Actually, since I don’t really want to upgrade the site on the current host, I just want to import my data to my new wordpress.com hosted blog… maybe we’re going about this the wrong way.
Is there some utility out there that will take the 2.1.3 xml data export file and write it in an acceptable transport format for the latest WordPress?
Thanks!

There really isn’t any sort of converter. You should be able to upgrade 2.1 -> 2.7, then use 2.7’s built-in upgrader to finish.

staff-blorbo – THANKS!
I upgraded from 2.1 to 2.5 then to 2.7. I then auto updated to 3.2.1. All worked fine, though I never bothered to recreate themes & plugins. Thankfully WordPress is cool enough to prompt me for an “automatic” database update on both instances – just a one click update with no fuss on my part. Quite frankly, I’m amazed it all worked.
I successfully imported all my posts to my http://revaugie.wordpress.com/ blog! I have 2 more questions now that perhaps you could help me with. You’ve been so helpful already. If there is another support staff that is more appropriate to deal with these questions, please just let me know. My questions are:
1.) Is there any way to “automatically” import the images that would have been linked from my other posts, or do I have to manually add them to the new text posts from my import file?
2.) This is an unusual question: I originally created pastoraugie.wordpress.com back in 2008 to test out wordpress, but then decided to manually host wordpress directly on our own webhost. So pastoraugie.wordpress.com has sat there all these years. Now I want to use it. I can still login to the administrator area of that page using the “Site Admin” link, but I could never make any changes that were visible on that blog. When I tried to “Register” that as one of my blogs (using the same login that created pastoraugie.wordpress.blog) it said that that name was already taken. So I registered another blog (revaugie.wordpress.com). So now things are really weird. When I go to either pastoraugie.wordpress.com OR revaugie.wordpress.com and login, I see the same dashboard with the same 74 posts. It clearly knows I am the same user, but my changes only show up on revaugie. Any ideas on what I can do? There is no content on pastoraugie.wordpress.com that I want to save. I’d really like to have pastoraugie.wordpress.com and revaugie.wordpress.com be the same blog… OR at least be able to control both blogs separately since I am the “owner” of both names/blogs. Can you help?
THANKS MUCH!

Hi Augie,
To automatically import your images, simply select the option to “Download and import file attachments” when uploading your XML file via your Tools -> Import page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/#importing-media-photos-videosRegarding your two blogs, it looks like each blog is connected to a different username. Currently, revaugie.wordpress.com is connected to the account from which you’re contacting us — pastoraugie.
If you’d like to move both of these blogs to one account, we’ll need you to contact us privately from the email address associated with the pastoraugie.wordpress.com account so we can prove your blog ownership :)

when I go to pastoraugie.wordpress.com and revaugie.wordpress.com /wp-admin page, the login I use is the exact same. Regardless of which blog’s “Site Admin” link I use, it brings me to the same user/Home page with the same 74 posts. It is truly weird.
Intersting/Confusing – how could I have created “pastoraugie.wordpress.com” back in 2008, if I didn’t have the pastoraugie username? Wasn’t it default back then to have only one blog per user and the blogname to be username.wordpress.com?
regardnig the importing of images… do I need only to do something different on the import? In other words, is the export process the same regardless of image import or not? Or do I need to redo the export first? Also – is Word Press smart enough that if I reimport using the new settings that I won’t get double entries of all my posts? Or do I need to delete all my posts first? If so, what’s the best way to do that? Would I need to delete pages and groups and everything first too?
Thanks for your help!

one more little thing… just in case this is helpful …when I am logged in and I go to the URL:
http://pastoraugie.wordpress.com/wp-admin/, it automatically redirects to:
http://revaugie.wordpress.com/wp-admin/I can watch it change in the URL field of my browser.
My sense is that this has something to do with the fact that the pastoraugie.wordpress.com is probably an ancient installation, as I never would have upgraded it in the last 3 years, and auto-update wasn’t an option at the time, if I recall.
Thanks again!

You have always been able to create as many blogs under one account as you desired. Basically, just import the content into the blog desired, or open another new once.
If you re-import, existing content will not be duplicated.
http://pastoraugie.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ redirects to http://revaugie.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ because it is owned by a different account and you aren’t logging in under that account.

Thank you for your help. I still need help with a couple things:
1.) I never saw the “Download and import file attachments” but it seems to have worked. The problem is that it redirected all the image URL’s to my old site. Any way to globally point them at my wordpres.com site & get those actually media files uploaded via FTP or something?
2.) I have tried logging into WordPress with both my pastoraugie and iadicicco usernames and neither seems to have access to (email visible only to moderators and staff). There is a small possibility that that pastoraugie@ site does not belong to me – though I highly doubt it. Is there a way that you could tell me the email address associated with (email visible only to moderators and staff)? (I suspect it would be either iadicicco.net or savinggracelc.org).
Thanks for all your help!

that [email redacted] s/b pastoraugie.wordpress.com … and pastoraugie@ refers also to pastoraugie.wordpress.com. Sorry for the confusion in my haste.
