Migrating from WordPress.com to a self-hosted site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello I am looking for help with migrating a WordPress.com blog to a new, self-hosted domain. I’d like to be able to redirect all traffic from the WordPress.com blog to a new domain for a short period of time, until subscribers get used to the new domain. I have yet to settle on a new domain name, but it will be a SSL URL. I see that the WordPress.com Site Redirect feature only works for non-SSL URLs. Is there another way to redirect WordPress.com blog traffic to a SSL URL? Any support would be much appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

You can follow the steps given here to migrate your site to self-hosted wordpress.org: https://move.wordpress.com/
Or else, you can buy the guided transfer which comes at $129.00 per blog transferred.

    What does guided transfer include?

    • Installing the WordPress software at your choice of one of our recommended hosts.

    • Transferring over the content from your WordPress.com site.

    • Installing and configuring Jetpack and a few other plugins to provide features that you have been using on WordPress.com.

    • Configuring and testing permissions so that you’ll be able to have one-click installs and upgrades.

    • Switching your domain(s) name server settings to point over to the new site.

    • Answering questions and providing guidance for you on your new WordPress installation for a two week period.

More information about the guided transfer can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

    Hope this was helpful!

    assadaboultaif,

Thank you for the helpful information. I appreciate it. However, I still would like an answer to my original question: can I use the WordPress Site Redirect feature for an SSL URL, or is this feature strictly limited to a non-SSL URL?

I will be using a new domain for the blog once it is self-hosted. I’m hoping I can redirect all traffic from friendsofscience.wordpress.com to the new domain for a short period of time. The reason for this is that the domain friendsofscience.wordpress.com is currently referenced on other websites, forums, publications etc. and I want to help avoid confusion for my subscribers. Eventually I want to deactivate friendsofscience.wordpress.com and use only the new domain.

    Thank you.
