Migrating from .wordpress.com to custom domain

I’ve attempted to figure this out on my own, but I couldn’t easily find a suitable answer. I know someone knows the answer.

I already own the saltformysoul.com domain through godaddy. Currently, I just have godaddy forward traffic to saltformysoul.wordpress.com. I’d like to completely switch to saltformysoul.com. I plan on doing so through wordpress to keep it simple. I’m getting quite a bit of traffic on saltformysoul.wordpress.com and I’ve been consistently moving up on the Google rankings. I don’t want to lose that.

If I do this through the wordpress.com interface(wordpress hosted), will it impact my Google rankings? For instance, currently if someone googles “triple numbers”, my post currently located at…..

    http://saltformysoul.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/triple-numbers-why-they-appear/

…..is in the top 5 search results.

After the migration, that article I’m assuming would be at…..

    http://saltformysoul.com/2012/05/09/triple-numbers-why-they-appear/

…..which is an entirely different web address than the former.

So after the migration, can anyone definitively say that I’d still be in the top 5 with the next address or would I in essence be starting over with Google? I’m thinking since I plan on doing through through wordpress.com, there’s a better chance of my site not falling off but before I do this, I’m looking for someone to give me some piece of mind.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

To use the domain saltformysoul.com on WordPress.com you would need to purchase domain mapping, change your name servers and update your primary blog address on WordPress.com. These steps are detailed at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You would take a short-term hit on Google as everything was redirected and updated, but you should recover relatively quickly. All previous links to your WordPress.com address would also resolve to your saltformysoul.com domain, so you wouldn’t have to worry about broken links.
