Migrating from WordPress.com to Self-Hosted: Failed to import post tag

    I keep getting the ‘Failed to import post tag’ error after attempting to import my export wordpress.com file. I forgot to import this file before transferring my domain name to my new host. A tech suggested I re-download my export file from my site.wordpress.com site (setting it as primary) as trying to import again. Some posts are transferring just fine, but I keep getting the ‘Failed to import post tag’ for a good portion of what I’m trying to transfer. Any other ideas?

    Hi there,

    As you’re importing to a self-hosted site, and it’s that site giving the error, there’s not much we can do from this end as we have no access to or control over your self-hosted site.

    That said, are you actually missing any content? I did some searching for this error, and all the cases I could find indicated that all content appeared to have imported in spite of that error.

    Something that might be causing problems for an import is the high comment to post ratio on your site. I see a lot of low quality comments on your site, saying only “great post” or “thank you” or similar. If you delete those and generate a new export, your file will be much smaller, and it should import much more easily.

    Apart from that, the best place to ask for help with this is the self-hosted forums, as the users there will be more likely to know what else could prevent a file from importing correctly on that end.
