Migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org
-
I would like to move my wordpress.com website to wordpress.org. I currently have my own website name. I have a few questions:
1) As a wordpress newbie, I was wondering if there are any really straightforward mechanisms available to move to wordpress.org with minimum hassle/ technical expertise.
2) From the advice I’ve received on a google + forum, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ll probably need to change my website name if I want the migration process to be simple. I’m assuming this is correct? In other words, if you know of any mechanism that allows me to migrate easily with my current website address, that would be great. If not, I’d prefer to choose the easiest route, even if it means using a new website address.
3) I’d prefer not to have to do this, but it may be easier to simply start a new website from scratch on wordpress.org, and not migrate. If I decide to do this, is it OK keeping the same blog name so that I can redirect traffic to the new site?
Any advice regarding some or all of the above questions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

I’m not sure why someone would have told you that.
You can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:
You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

You should not have to start from scratch. Take a look at the resources I have posted above and let me know if you have any questions.
