Migrating information from a linked blog to a new domain
-
Hello! I used to have a site under the URL roamingvoyager.com. I let the hosting payment lapse and therefore my domain was taken over by another site. I am trying to find out how to download the information of my site from WordPress so that I can migrate it to a new domain.
Is that possible? It says on my WordPress account that it is technically a ‘linked blog’ if that changes anything. I appreciate any help with this!
Correct account: Unknown
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

If you nor your hosting didn’t make a proper backup, I’m afraid there is nothing you can do.
Wordpress.com is a hosting platform, we don’t store data from external website. -
Hi there,
As @staartmees mentioned, we’re WordPress.com a hosting provider and we didn’t host your site. It appears that your host was A2 Hosting, so you can reach out to them and ask them for a backup of your site.
Alternatively, you can search for a cached version of your site on the Internet Archive and manually copy and download your content.

Thanks so much for the helpful information on where to find the backup of my site!
In the meantime while I’m trying to move my information to a new site, what would I need to do on my WordPress account to ensure the transition goes smoothly? Would the hosting company (A2) need access to my WordPress account at all?

We have tools to import your content here. You can find more information here:
https://transferto.wordpress.com/
Also, do not give your WordPress.com login information to anyone including your previous host. It’s not needed in order to import your content here.

Thank you!
So from my understanding, I need to get the download of my old site from my hosting company (A2). Then, I can use the steps you’ve provided to import my content into a new site.
Would this new site and domain have to be something I sort out with A2 before uploading this content into a new domain?
I’m not sure if that makes sense, however I’m a bit lost on what to do after I get my old data. Do I have to register a new domain with my host company, and then link that with WordPress before I import all the old content?

Not exactly: The steps @fstat provided above is if you want to migrate your site to our hosting on WordPress.com, and it’s not possible to upload a full backup to a WordPress.com site. It’s only possible to upload a WordPress export file, generating from Tools ->Export in the WP-Admin dashboard. So you’d need to be logged into the site’s dashboard to do this.
Alternatively you can install the open source version of WordPress locally on your computer, upload the backup from your host there, and then generate an export file that you can import to a new site on WordPress.com.

If you want to start a new site, still with A2 hosting, then you’ll need to sort that out, get WordPress installed and connected to your domain, before restoring the backup to that new site. In that case, they should even be able to help you restore the backup, if they’re just restoring it to another site on their servers. So in that case, it’s best to forget everything said here, and ask them for the best process on their end.
If you want to migrate to our hosting on WordPress.com, you can follow the import instructions we gave here to move your content to the jamiewalliker.wordpress.com site you’ve already created, and if you want your own custom domain you can register/connect that afterwards. In that case you can register the domain directly with us – it’s included for free for the first year on all our annual paid plans, and that way you can manage everything in one place.
