migrating to wordpress.com

Hello! We are looking to migrate the webiste (please, see the link above) from wordpress.org to wordpress.com with pusrchasing a Creater subscription. The problem is that it’s a custom-made website whith the theme uploaded to wordpress.org

Unfortunately, the agency who made it for us didn’t build in the ability to change the structure of a website, not even a functionality to change fonts or colors from the dashboard. So we are looking to migrate to wordpress.com However, I wonder, when we move it here, will we get this functionality which wordpress normally provides or now we are stuck with this half-static webpage? Hosetly, regret not just buying a good theme from wordpress straight away instead of getting help of so called professionals)) If I know that after migrating we can adjust website look and structure using standard wordpress, we are buying the subscription at once. Looking forward to hearing back from you! many thanks.

  • Hi there!

Thanks so much for reaching out. With a migration from your previous host to WordPress.com, the function of your existing site would not immediately change – in other words, that custom theme that the agency built for you would still be there, and that would still dictate how you can or cannot edit the site. As you mentioned, once you move, you can definitely then work on updating to a new theme that relies on block editing, so that you have more control over the content in the future.

One helpful tool for this work will be a staging site, which we offer for free with our Creator plan! After migrating, you can spin up an exact replica of your site in a “staging” environment, and use that to test out a new theme without impacting your live site. Once you’ve settled on a new theme and format for your content, you can “Sync” from staging over to production with a single click. Here’s how that works:
