Migrating to WordPress.org

Hi. I have an idea, and I need some guidance. I am considering self-hosting one of my blogs. However, I have some concerns and need to work a few things out first. I want to have different areas of the site be dedicated to different types of content as subdomains. With WordPress.com, of course the only way for me to accomplish that is to create several different blogs and then another that acts like an aggregate/home page for all the others. If I self-host, I know I can have the sub-domains. The other content I want is currently not created. Would I be able to expand the current blog to have this content without having to create blogs to map sub-domains to? I’m trying to decide if I can wait until I’m self-hosted for my new stuff, or do I need to go ahead and make it. I hope this makes sense.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m not sure I 100% understand what you’re looking for. Could you provide an example of how these subdomains would interact? Once I see this in action (or see an example), I’ll be able to help more.

Ok. Let’s say pruettlegacy.wordpress.com is story1. When I go do the self-hosting, it will be story1.com. Story2 and Story3 do not currently exist yet, but when they are created, I want them to be subdomains of story1.com. Because this is WordPress and not a website made from scratch, do I need to go ahead and create a story2.wordpress.com and story3.wordpress.com and then pay $13/per to have them mapped as subdomains of story1.com? Or, will I be able to just create new, separate content as subdomains in whatever hosting panel I choose?

You should be able to create new subdomains with the hosting partner you choose to go with. The domain registrar (where you register your domain) should offer you the ability to setup new subdomains. Then, you can host them with your hosting provider and install WordPress on them so they can be managed as separate sites. Does that make sense?

Ahhh, ok. So, WordPress is going to have to be installed on each subdomain. Got it. That’s what I didn’t know. Thank you!

New question, same subject. If I already have a domain and want to have all of my WP.com sites be subdomains of it, would I have to pay the WP premium for every site I have?

  • Unknown's avatar

Not necessarily! You would only need to pay the domain mapping upgrade of $13/yr. However, if you would like to have all of the Premium bundle features mentioned in this link, you would need to setup Premium on each subdomain:

    WordPress.com Premium [Redirects to Plans]

Does that help to clarify? So, each subdomain (story1.example.com) would be a separate .wordpress.com blog. More on subdomains here:

Yes, this makes sense. You’ve given me a lot to think about :-) Thanks.
