migrating website content

    Hi,

    how do I migrate content from the free WP version to my own domain that’s registered elsewhere?

    I have a hosted .co.uk domain and it has WP installed. My brother hosts the domain for me and has pointed that url at my FB page. I didn’t have the main login details to hand at the weekend, so couldn’t get into the server to change this myself and build a WP website directly on this domain.

    So I decided to start messing about with the free version of WordPress.com. I wasn’t expecting much, as I have no experience with WP and didn’t expect to be able to build a polished website in a day. It was just intended for me to play and learn. A few hours later, I had a good-looking website.

    How do I migrate the content over from the .wordpress.com site to the .co.uk domain where it needs to be? I know I could do this via a plugin but it says I’m not allowed to install plugins on the free version.

    Is there an easy way to migrate the content? OR do I need to retrace my steps and rebuild at the permanent domain?

    Hi there,

    You can export your content from your_site->Tools ->Export to select the site content you want to export.

    Moreover, to import the exported content to your website you can take a look at here https://wordpress.com/support/import/

    Hi there,

    Just to be clear, you’ll only be able to move your content away from WordPress.com. You won’t be able to migrate your theme and settings as well. So you won’t need to re-create any of your content, but you might need to recreate some aspects of the site itself depending on just how much you’ve already done on our end.

    Keep in mind that the import instructions you linked to are specifically for WordPress.com’s importer, which doesn’t look or work the same as the Core importer plugin the OP will be using on their self-hosted site :)
