Hello!
At WordPress.com, you don’t have access to FTP or cPanel of your website. Also, when you are transferring your website to a self-hosted WordPress installation (I presume you are transferring a WordPress.com website to WordPress.org hosted at Hostgator), everything you need to know can be found at the link below:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/
If you would like to keep your domain at WordPress.com, then you just need to point the nameservers to your self-hosted installation:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/
Or, you can also transfer the whole domain to your new host (for specific instructions, you might need to contact Hostgator support team):
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
Hope this helps! Cheers :)

HI Dakisha – thank you for this. I chose to transfer my domain registration to the Hostgator ‘baby’ plan but in the help link you sent me it says i can only do that after it’s been registered for 60 days…and that would mean that i can’t get a refund from WordPress because support told me yesterday I only have 30 days to get a refund from them. I registered my domain on Nov 18th. But no-one along the line has mentioned this 60 day lock. So, how do I manage that?
Thanks again

domain name registration is 48 hours not 30 days
change the name servers to point to Host Gator – Host Gator should be able to give you the correct settings
