Migrating WordPress.com blog to self-hosted blog?

    Hey guys,

I’ve been blogging for about 7 months now and I really enjoy doing it. l think my blog has the potential of getting a decent amount of traffic if I were to be self-hosted. I’m also thinking of monetising my blog. I have done a bit of research on how to start a self-hosted blog and it seems having programming knowledge would be an advantage, however, I am not very technically minded when it comes to programming language and so on. Just wondering if it would be worth becoming self-hosted?

    What do y’all think?

Why would you need to learn programming? If you want to hack themes or invent plugins, then yes, but otherwise you’ll never need it.

The pros and cons of being free hosted by WordPress.com or self hosting a WordPress.org software install are summed up very well in this support documentation entry – http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you are an experienced WordPress.com software user, and have the skill sets required to set up and manage your own self hosted WordPress.org install then the instructions for making the move are easy to follow. But if you are not skilled at WordPress.com blogging, and also lack the skill sets required to self host your own WordPress.org install then acquiring those skills first is recommended.

The required skill sets for setting up and managing a WordPress.org install are found in this article along with step by step instructions and advice > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/06/setting-up-a-self-hosted-wordpress-org-install/

I purchased a domain and domain mapping for a successful blog and moved it to a self-hosted install. That blog has never achieved the same level of traffic as a stand alone island that it did when it was free hosted here at wordpress.com and was part of this community.

By programming I mean HTML and CSS of which I have very little understanding. I would think in terms of design I would need some knowledge in this?

    Correct me if I’m wrong.

It really depends on you. If you are willing to accept and install one of the many excellent free themes then you won’t be tinkering with any coding at all. If however you are a person who wants to fuss around with editing templates and CSS styledheets then and only then will you need to have php and CSS skills.

Most people I know who moved to self-hosting because they wanted to monetized a blog have made little over and above the web costing costs. You will find more $ information in the post I linked to above.

If you are working from the assumption that the same blog will draw more traffic than it does here at WordPress.com just because you are self hosting it then IMO you are wrong.

Hmm, harsh words. Guess I may have to reconsider doing it then.

Timethief is quite correct. WP.COM seo is far superior to offsite SEO. I’ve blogged about it numerous times.

The wordpress.ORG and .COM software first off isn’t written in HTML, it is written in PHP scripting. HTML is useful for doing little bits in posts and pages that isn’t built into the editor, but really you are typically not going to need it.

CSS is nice to have a general knowledge of since it allows you to tweak things in a theme to better suit your desires, but it is by no means a necessity. With all the themes out there you are bound to find one that comes very close to what you want without any customization.

The wordpress software is designed so that you really don’t need to know much to get the most out of it. That is the beauty and the power of it.
