migrating wordpress.org blog to wordpress.com

I have a WordPress blog hosted on another server. I have endless problems, and a complete lack of support. Since this is supposed to be a “fun” hobby for me – I decided to go with a wordpress.com site. However, I have not been able to download the export xml file from my other hosted site. I have a full backup of the site itself, grabbed from ftp. But, try as I might, I can’t get the export xml to download. It seems to be downloading, but after a while I get a “can’t connect to the website” message.

Is there a way for me to use my saved data in a wordpress.com site? Or, am I just out of luck, and have to start anew?

Support for self-hosted blogs can be found under: http://wordpress.org/support
Could you please explain what do you mean by: “I have a full backup of the site itself, grabbed from ftp” and “I have not been able to download the export xml file from my other hosted site”? How do you download other than via ftp? Where did you transfer the full backup via ftp?
If you succeed getting that backup file on your local pc you can import it in a wordpress.com blog (size limit: 3 MB, so if it’s bigger you’ll have to split it).
