    Hi, I am trying to migrate my data over to another server. Do I need to upgrade to use a migration plugin or can I somehow do it for free another way?

    Hi there,

    If you’re trying to migrate one of your sites hosted with us on WordPress.com, you can do that by creating a WordPress export file of your site content at My Site ->Tools ->Export.

    Export your website’s content

    That will give you a .xml file, or a .zip folder containing multiple .xml files, which you can import to any new or existing WordPress installation at a new host.

    Full site migrations of WordPress.com sites is not possible, as we use a modified version of the WordPress software, so your site, theme, and database files are not directly compatible with the open source version of WordPress you’ll be using somewhere else.
