Migration from Genesis StudioPress to WordPress.com
-
Hi All
Hope you are well.
I am wanting to move my website to wordpress host.
Given I am blogging just as a hobby and not posting as much as I would like to (2017, I only managed to post 7 posts!), it does not make sense for me to pay high hosting fees now. I have been inactive also last few months.
I have been recommended to use a free host, rather than to backup and extract incase I lose it. At least if its online its still there. I was initially thinking to close my website, but I want to keep it, just incase I post something along the way.
I am a true novice, I am not an expert in these matters, so I would greatly appreciate any assistance as to how I can go about moving my website to wordpress host.
PS: My website is http://www.meherlagastronome.com
Cheers

Hi there,
Please refer the below support document regarding the same.
https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Hi there,
You can migrate your content from your existing site by going to Tools ->Export in the dashboard and then importing that file on WordPress.com, as explained in more detail at the link @iamrishaan gave above.
However, please note you won’t be able to transfer your current theme or any plugins that way. If you want to keep using the same theme and/or plugins on your site, you’ll need the WordPress.com Business Plan, and you’ll need to set up the theme and/or plugins from scratch here as we don’t offer full database uploads on WordPress.com sites.

Thanks both.
As you mentioned Kokkieh, I wont be able to keep my theme/plugs if I transfer to wordpress which I have come to realise.
I think the best for me is to close down my website which is a shame. As I like my theme and template and dont want to migrate again as that wil just be a headache.
I will just download a backup tool and save? And when am ready to blog again can upload again. Do any of you reading this recommend a backup tool? There seem to be different opinions, but I want something simple, easy, and in plain English! :) -

I think the best option would be to ask your hosting provider, StudioPress, for a full backup of your site’s files, including the media files. Most hosting providers provide this on request. I don’t have personal experience with backup plugins, though, so I’m not able to recommend a specific one if you want to do this yourself.
I’d still recommend exporting your content to a free site here with us as well. Even if you set the site to private so only you will be able to see it, at least you’ll know the content is safe somewhere.

Unfortunately StudioPress dont which is rather disappointing. Only thing I can do is download a back up or close the site. I am going to try the All in one Migration plug in and see. At least I will have copy of my content and then perhaps upload to wordpress.

If they have an option to download a backup that should be a full site backup. All in one Migration should also work. But keep in mind that backup can only be uploaded to a self-hosted WordPress installation.
If you want to migrate your content to WordPress.com, you’ll need the .xml export file as well.

Hi Kokkieh
What do you mean by “backup can only be uploaded to a self-hosted WordPress installation.” -
-
If you download a full site backup you’d need the ability to again upload those files directly to the server for another site. That is not possible on WordPress.com, but only on self-hosted installations where your hosting provider gives you that server access.
The WordPress software has a built-in exporter for your content only. That is in the WP-Admin dashboard under Tools ->Export.
