Migration from wordpress.com (premium) to wordpress.org
-
Hello everyone,
First of all, sorry for my english because im French !
I have a concern about migrating a site from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.
I have read a lot of similar topics ,but I don’t think my specific case has been covered yet.The site concerned is a “mysite.fr” type.
It works under wordpress.com, with a premium plan.
Moreover, a domain mapping was performed because the site was previously a “my site.wordpress.com” type. The domain name was purchased from Ionos.
So what I would like to do, is keep the content of the site, be able to use wordpress.org, without having to delete it.
In other words, I want to keep my content, the same site name “mysite.fr”, but just leave wordpress.com for wordpress.org.
I exported the site successfully and got an xml file.
I am unfortunately stuck at this step, because when I go to Filezilla in order to see the content of my site, I cannot find anything. In order to avoid making a big mistake, I prefer to have the advice of specialists.
Is this change possible? What should I do ?Thank you all in advance.

Hi, @monsieurgran
You have a complete guide for Moving to Self-Hosted WordPress here:

BTW, you don’t need Filezilla for the import
https://move.wordpress.com/exportimport-content/ (number 4 of the complete guide). -

Just one more question.
I don’t know if i have been clear.
But my website url is already “mywebsite.com” / It was a “mywebsite.wordpress.com” before but i bought the premium pack with wordpress.
What is going to happen when i will import my xml file under wordpress.org ? Will it create duplicate content ? (because my actual website is running with wordpress.com)
Sorry if im not clear enough, im doing my best there !
thanks in advance!

Yes.
When you finish with the whole process and the site hosted on your new hosting is up and running, you can delete the site you have hosted here at WordPress.com or make it private. So the search engines (Google and others) will not penalize you for having duplicate content.

Hello (Sorry it’s me again).
I have a problem and I don’t know how to solve it ! (I am scared to make a mistake)
So, WordPress has been installed through Ionos. It was very fast and easy.
They ask me to created an admin ID and a password.Problem : When i try to connect with that admin ID, WordPress tell me it does not exist.
So I followed “Galois” instructions and made private my website that is running through wordpress.com (mywebsite.fr) .
The connexion is still impossible. The situation now is :
My website is still on (wordpress.com)Wordpress.org is set up but i can’t manage nothing.
Through Ionos, i can access to a “live website content” which show me a new WordPress page, with the ID created : “Hello World etc.”It looks like I have created a parallel site without the possibility to manage it.
Is my problem connected to the server name?
Thanks again in advance !

Sorry Little Update for me
I have stopped the mapping domain from my WordPress.com account
So now the content of my website is only visible on mywebsite.wordpress.com
But when i go to mywebsite.fr , i see that message :
mywebsite.wordpress.com doesn’t exist
Sometimes i can go on there but only with my phone…
Is it normal? Thanks again in advance !

Hi there,
It would help if you could share the actual domain you’re using because on the account you’re posting from, we have no history of paid subscriptions. It sounds like you might be referring to a different account.
Also, note that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two completely independent entities so, the ID you created with Ionos is probably to access your site from WP-admin. I’m not sure they would ask you to create an account with WordPress.org, but I’m sure it wasn’t a new WordPress.com one.

Thanks a lot !
Yes the website is not linked to that account , i want to keep it private.
Could I send it to you in private message?
