Migration of ~20Gb self hosted WordPress site to WordPress.com

    Hi there,
    We have a self hosted WordPress site that has outgrown our host due to its photo-heavy content. Rather than continue to faff with managing our own site we’re wanting to move over to a self-hosted service, WordPress or Squarespace. Efforts to migrate our site over to the latter during the trial period have been a mixed bag, with existing comments refusing to migrate over (despite being possible, supposedly) and a lot of formatting issues being introduced which would require a lot of manual fixing.

    Wordpress.com is the more obvious choice of course – apparently we should be able to bring over the entire site as-is more or less automatically, which would be great! – but we’ve been unable to do a proper import/migration test with a trial site due to the limitations.

    I’m reluctant to fork over the money for a Business-level account without being sure we can transfer over everything intact. Can anyone actually confirm the ability for WordPress.com’s importer to be able to bring in a large (almost 20Gb) existing WordPress install over without losing stuff or requiring a tonne of extra work before being able to launch?

    Many thanks for reaching out.

    It is possible to move the site as and we have a migration tool available here to assist that: https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

    Because the site is self-hosted, the business plan is required for this migration to happen. This is because installable themes and plugins are only available on the business plan.

    We do have a 14 day, no questions asked refund window available from the day of purchase, so if things go awry, there’s nothing lost.

    You wouldn’t need to purchase a domain for this migration, nor would you have to automatically point the domain you have until you’re ready.

    We can also help with the migration and dot any i’s and cross any t’s.
