migration to wordpress.org I need hosting username and password

Hi guys, I am moving my site to self-hosting (not one of your preferred hosting sites). In order for this to happen my hosting provider has requested the following below. I am happy, of course, to pay for your help:

“Your domain (http://beyonddigitalstrategy.com/) is currently on wordpress hosting. The details you have provided us allows to control your domain name and website content, but it will not allow us to download the files required for site migration. Can you please provide the current hosting username and password for this domain, which are mandatory for site migration.”

  • Hi there. There is nothing that your new host will be able to download, as we don’t have any FTP access to our blogs (http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/). The only thing you can transfer is your blog’s content, and you do that by creating an XML export file under Tools ->Export in the dashboard. That file is then uploaded to your self-hosted site to transfer your posts and pages.

But there’s no way to transfer your theme or your blog’s actual base files. You need to install the WordPress.org software to your new host, install a theme, and then transfer your content.

See this support doc on transferring to WordPress.org: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
