Migration: What'll happen to likes and Social Media
-
Hi guys,
I am about to migrate my side to .org. I wonder what will happen to my Like and Shares etc. if I do the content import. I am talking about the Gravatar Likes and the regular Facebook Like / Tweets etc. I will install Jetpack.
Will all of those numbers be lost and set to zero?
Thanks for the info.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
To move your email subscribers and WordPress followers, you would have to follow the instructions here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/For Facebook Likes and Tweets, you need to redirect your old pages on the .com to the new pages at the .org. There are a couple of ways to do this but the easiest is by doing Site Redirect:

Likes cannot be transferred. I don’t know how shares are treated. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks, I will wait for staff’s response.
@honeysilvas: I am already using a custom URL which is http://escapology.eu. And I will also use this URL at wordpress.org. Would I also need to purchase site direct in this case?

Hi,
I just wanted to add, if you don’t mind @timethief.
Facebook will not transfer Likes to your new page per se but if you embed the button for the old page on the new page, you can get the old Likes to show as explained here:
http://60daymba.com/how-to-get-your-facebook-likes-juice-to-pass-on-through-to-a-new-website-if-you-301-redirect-and-move/I haven’t tried this recently so I don’t know if Facebook has changed anything since then but I don’t see why it shouldn’t work. I imagine you can do a similar thing for Twitter or other social media sites.
Hope that helps!

Likes are not transferred.
For Facebook and Twitter shares, if you use the same domain and the same permalink structure on your new site, and connect your new site with Jetpack, the share numbers should appear. If you change your permalink structure, they will be lost. This is totally on Facebook and Twitter’s side of things, as they are using the permalink to keep track of these numbers.
If you are using escapology.eu on your WordPress.com site and will be using it on your new self-hosted site, you will not need site redirect. You will just need to update the name servers on your new hosting to point to the domain and traffic will automatically go to the new site.
