Mirroring WordPress Blog on WordPress
-
Hi,
I have a blog on WordPress, whose URL is my name dot wordpress dot com. But I also have a name for the blog, and I would like to mirror the blog at blogname dot wordpress dot com?Is this possible? I’m not doing it for SEO/spamming purposes, but because of confusion; Some people might type in the blog name mistakenly, which would not take them to the blog.

If the name (WordPress.com sub-domain) you want is available, you can create a new blog there and transfer contents.
-
One thing that you should be aware of is that you leave both sites live, the search engines will see the duplicate content on the web and their first thought will be splogger (spam blogger) and they will discount the page rank and search index ranking on both blogs. Never duplicate content on the web. It will destroy your search engine ranking.
-
I should add that you can transfer your stuff over here, but mark the blog as private so that the search engines do not see it.

naokomc, thank you.
thesacredpath,
Thank you for your advice. I previously put up a single post at the alternate address ( blogname.wordpress.com) explaining that readers can find my blog can at myname.wordpress.com , instead of a mirror.
About duplication: There is another site on which I blog, which features a number of other bloggers. I use it to reach a wider audience, as it has readers who do not regularly read my blog. I syndicate some, but by no means all, of my posts. If neither of these sites are private, will my search index ranking decline? What would you recommend?

You know, with the search engines, it is really hard to guess. A duplicate post here and there isn’t, I would think, going to be a problem. The problem comes when many posts are duplicated. What the definition of “many” is, is a secret of the search engines and most likely changes about as fast as we change socks. They are constantly adjusting things in response to those trying to “game” the system. That’s one of the reasons I stay away from all the trendy, trick SEO stuff meant to beat the search engines. I stick with the basics and that has worked well for me with my clients.

I have a duplicate blog at Dot Org, I started as a newbie here at dot Com but was “given” a blogspace at dot Org and then got interested in learning how to use that, the differences between the two, etc. etc. I want to keep the arrangement just as it is, in case one or the other site should go down for any reason. That is more likely to occur at dot Org, it seems to me. I did consider the search engine problem and so, at the moment, the dot Org version of my site is blocked from search, while the dot Com site is not! :-)
