Misleading redirected "like"

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to report a misleading redirected “like”… It was posted on my site a couple days ago by “jheaven rieta”, who supposedly resides at perfect.com… When I clicked on perfect.com in my list of likes and follows, it led to proactis.com/us/, which seems to be some sort of business… I backed out of it right away…

I have had several such “likes” and am thinking they are up to no good… Maybe WordPress should check them out… The email notice I received regarding “jheaven rieta” noted the “like”, but did not list any posts this so-called blogger might have written.

Thank you for taking care of everyone using WordPress… It is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there,

The fact that the site in someone’s Gravatar profile redirects to another link does not mean they are up to no good. Such a redirect can simply mean they’ve changed the domain connected to their site at some point, but did not update the link they have added to their profile itself.

There is also no requirement that someone’s profile must be connected to a blog – you can connect literally any site on the web to your username profile, you don’t even have to own the site in question, nor does the site have to be on WordPress.com, and many people choose to link to their business websites.

If the site someone’s profile links to appears to be fraudulent, like a phishing site, or a site that contains illegal content, you can report that profile directly from Gravatar.com and our terms of service team can review the profile. But nothing I see on the proactis.com website leads me to believe this might be the case here.

This is just someone who liked a post on your site and whose profile happened to be linked to a business website rather than a blog.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thank you very much for getting back to me and explaining all this stuff I didn’t have a clue about… I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner — life happens…

I’m glad this wasn’t anything serious as I’ve had this happen a number of times… Have a great day.

  • No worries. I’m glad I could put your mind at ease :)

Keep in mind, you don’t have to click on the link for every person who likes or follows your site. I did that myself when I first started out, but there are so many people who like and follow one’s site just to get one to follow them back, I no longer bother. If someone doesn’t comment on a post, and with the type of comment that shows me they actually took the time to read the post, I don’t give them that click.
