Missing A Few 'F's

One additional clue: if I try to type an fl or fi combination in the notifications timeline (if I were responding to a comment, for example) the f will appear. Then, if I follow it with an “i” or and “l”, it disappears from the page.

A glitch with liguatures (like fl and fi) was introduced in the Merriweather font a few days ago. According to the font’s developer, a fix will be pushed through to Google Fonts today (Jan. 25) in the morning, Pacific time:

Temporary workarounds include:
1. Add the following custom CSS, if you have access to the upgrade:
html {
-webkit-font-variant-ligatures: none;
-moz-font-variant-ligatures: none;
font-variant-ligatures: none;
}
</del>[EDIT: the above CSS will not work unfortunately]
OR,2. In your Customizer’s Fonts panel, choose another font.

Unfortunately it turns out that our CSS editor doesn’t support those ligature declarations I mentioned earlier – they will get stripped out. Changing your font is probably the best workaround for now.

Kitty – great, thanks for letting me know.
If anyone switches fonts to something other than Merriweather and still sees a display issue with the letter “f”, please let me know and provide a link to your site. As far as I know the “f” issue is isolated to this one font.

I see no way to change fonts within the gateway theme. Is there a way I can change fonts to see if that works? or do I have to change to a new theme to get a new font?

mwboyscamp – you can select fonts in the Customizer’s Fonts panel in any theme. There are several ways to get to the Customizer, you can find them listed here with screenshots
Once you’re in the Customizer, click on the Fonts tab to open the panel and select a new base and/or headings font.
Click the Save button when done.

The missing “f” issue in Merriweather looks like it’s fixed now. You may need to refresh your site to see the new version.
If anyone is still having trouble with missing letters, please provide a link to a page or post where I can have a look.

kellyteitzel – glad to hear your site is back to normal. We actually needed to wait for the Merriweather developer to push their fix to Google Fonts in this case, but fortunately they were able to get that out today.
