Missing API Key

I have set up a wp-blog on my webspace. It works. And then I registered and got an api-key. But these two kinda don’t work together. I can’t install WordPress stats, it tells me “Error from last API-Key attempt: Missing API key” when I try to add the blog to my new account. What now?

Since very few of the volunteers here have experience with the stats plugin, you will need to contact staff directly at http://support.wordpress.com/contact/ .

Make sure and include the URL of your self-hosted blog, and the account that you are trying to use.

    Hi,

I have my good old blog (www.pappito.com) wich is hosted elsewhere and running WP. There is no problems. But I have another domain reg, hosted, and running WP. (www.izeland.com) I have tried to set up the stat with my API but it was insuccesful.

When I added my api,(in the izeland.com wpstat plugin) the engine figured out, this is me, Pappito, I got a button : “add to wordpress.com account”. When I clicked the button i got “missing API key” error message.I gave the API again than looped.

As far as I know it is possible to have more than one blog under my wp.com account, even they hosted by independent hosting companies. (actually dreamhost) The independently hosted pappito.com is listed under my wp.com profile.

So, my stats aren’t work under izeland.com and I cannot set izeland.com onto my wp.com account as I already set pappito.com. My izeland.com is very new, just the wp and one post to try. I would start it in days, writing post under my pappito nick.
    thank you,

    Pappito

@pappito, what is probably happening is that there is already stats information in the system for izeland.com filed under a particular WordPress.com username, and you are now trying to setup the stats plugin using a different WordPress.com username. You can check this by logging in to your WordPress.com account and going to the blog stats page, if you do not see izeland.com in the drop down menu, then the username you logged in as does not have access to the stats. So, you need to login to the correct WordPress.com where you can see izeland.com in the list. You can use the API key for that username, OR, you can give access to the other username. To give access to the other username, you need to enter the email address associated with the username you would like to use into the form at the bottom of the Blog Stats page. See http://faq.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/how-do-i-change-the-api-key-used-for-wordpresscom-stats/ to learn more about this.

Also note that, if you have existing stats in the system, you should choose the option to “Replace an existing blog” not the option to “Add new blog to my account.” The option to “Replace an existing blog” will continue to add stats to the existing stats which are already on file for your blog (which you will see in a drop down menu if they are available). Use the “Add new blog to my account” option if you want to start measuring the stats in a separate stats instance.

I am having a similar problem to pappito. A friend had set up a WordPress account over a year ago, but now I am managing it for him. He doesn’t know what his WordPress account password was, and the email address it was tied to has since been deleted, so I can’t recover the password. I am trying to add his blog, which is also hosted externally, to my WordPress account to use my API key for stats and such. When I enter the key, and select “Add to Wordpess.com account” I get the following error: Error from last API Key Attempt: Missing API Key on the next page. Any ideas?

I’m also can’t get the API key. My blog is self-hosted…is WordPress 2.7.1’s problem?
