MISSING COMMENT BUTTONS?

  • Unknown's avatar

Reply/comment button has disappeared from 90% of my blogs. People can no longer leave a comment. They’ve been emailing me complaining. Anyone know anything?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you got your Discussion settings such that comments close after a certain period of time?

All wordpress blogs by default have comments open on all posts and pages. It looks like you have disabled comments on your posts and pages must enable them.

This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.

Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

See, this is what’s freaking me out. I’ve checked all that out. I’ve tried all the ways mentioned by you to get it done. Remember that this just happened out of nowhere. I had not changed my settings. Not disabled anything. And if you were to look at my settings right now, you’d see that they are set to allow comments. (I’m also still having the problem with my new comments getting buried below despite my setting for newest on top. What’s up with the comments problem?) I have not set comments to close after a certain period of time. None of that. So what do I do when the settings are correct, but the system is not following them? I’m feeling frustrated, because there is nothing I can do. I haven’t changed anything. But something is wrong internally with wordpress, and I can’t fix that. The systyem is not following my settings, that’s the problem. But, thanks for all the great suggestions. They are really appreciated. A lot of times for other subjects you guys have cleared things up for me immediately. You’re the best. Thanks.

  • timethief is right, at Settings -> Discussion in your blog’s Dashboard, “Allow people to post comments on new articles” is not checked.

Once you check and save that, you’ll need to re-enable comments on each existing post following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

First you go to Settings > Discussion and make sure that the option “Automatically close comments on articles older than [n] days” is not checked, and that the options “Allow link notifications from other blogs” and “Allow people to post comments on new articles” are checked.
But these two options won’t allow commenting on already published posts if commenting was disabled (either in the Discussion settings or on each individual post) when you published those posts. So next you need to go to Posts > All Posts, click Quick Edit under the title of each post, and make sure the options “Allow Comments” and “Allow Pings ” are checked; or (faster) tick the little square next to “Title” to select all the posts, select Edit in the Bulk Actions pulldown, click Apply, select “Allow” in the Comments and Pings pulldowns, click Update.
