Missing comments section
-
My users aren’t seeing the comments field on each others’ posts. Interaction is an important part of our site. If a post already has comments on it, then they can leave replies, but the bottom of recent posts, where the “Leave A Reply” field would normally appear, is simply blank.
Here’s a screenshot of a current blog post with no comment section:

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you aware comments can be turned on or off while editing / creating a post? Your ‘users’ may have not enabled them by accident… If they are using the ‘new editor’ scroll down viewing the ‘left sidebar’ of options until you see the ‘allow comments’
-
Alternatively, if you’d like to fix / check the various posts yourself for this.. just go to Dashboard > All Posts > Quick Edit for each one, and ensure ‘allow comments’ is tick boxed, then ‘update / save’ before closing the ‘quick edit box’
hope this helps.

Thanks — you’re correct, the comments are not turned on for every post. I thought they had been automatically enabled for all posts. Is there a WordPress setting that makes “allow comments” the default for all new posts?
-
Just FYI, in discussion settings, I do have “Allow people to post comments on new articles” checked, but when my users create new posts, the “allow comments” box is already unchecked. What are we doing wrong?

Okay, after some more poking around, I’ve discovered a discrepancy.
Under their own WordPress logins, in the new editor, there is a “Discussion” section with an “Allow comments” option that is automatically checked:

I will have to mark this for staff for you then.. as I’m not sure how to fix it, if as you say the blog is marked to allow comments in ‘discussion’ section, I would only ask if there are any other ‘administrators’.. this can be changed individually also. (wp.com sort of doesn’t advise to add administrators ~ as ‘nothing is off limits’) so I think it would have to do with the ‘roles’

You’re welcome, in the meantime here’s a similar answer for you to check https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/comments-in-illustratr-theme-1?replies=4
As it shows how to apply ‘bulk actions’ to edit at the link for All Posts > you can allow comments to all the posts in one go.. -

Hi there,
Thanks for letting us know about that issue! I see what you mean about comments being disabled on those posts by the contributors on your blog. I reported the problem to our team to look into.
In the meantime, the comments will still work for contributors on your blog if they use the classic editor in the WP Admin dashboard to create their posts. To get there from https://wordpress.com/ your contributors can click on “My Sites” in the upper left, and then click on “WP Admin” in the sidebar to open the classic WP Admin dashboard. They can start a new post under Posts > Add New or use this direct link for that:

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
