Missing Genericons on Adelle Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to have no problems whatsoever with the Genericons social media icons displayed on the sidebar of my blog (http://erikadejesus.com) but now the Instagram (f215), Google Plus (f218), and Question Mark (f457) icons suddenly won’t show for some reason. The other remaining icons (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and Mail) still appear, though.

I didn’t change anything in the stylesheet of my site since the last time I saw the icons complete; I just happened to check my page and I noticed the icons that were once there are not anymore. Why is this happening?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It looks like Adelle doesn’t load the whole Genericon character set (as shown here). I’ve checked this out on my test blog and I get the same results as you. For future reference the other characters that aren’t being loaded are: f215-225, f424-476 and f504-507.

You could make an image of that icon and upload it to your media library then use that in your custom CSS as a work around instead.

Really? That’s odd (and really inconvenient), especially since it used to load all of them before. Thank you for the suggestion, though. I might do that instead.

If it was working previously I’ll tag this thread for a member of staff to look into, sounds like something which should be looked at – if it’s affecting both your site any my test blog then it’s likely the same for everyone using Adelle on WordPress.com (although not everyone will be editing the CSS like you have!)

Yeah, all of them used to work and they had been working for months. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, the missing icons were still showing up around 2 days ago.

Thank you so much for your help!

I just went to my site again, and I found that all the icons are displayed on a static “About Me” page. I also just noticed that the margin dimensions (padding/margin of the social media icons, link items on the navigation menu) plus the mail icon (f410) are different on the static page by shifting tabs to and from the home and about me page.

That’s… weird. Any clues? I’m so confused because I’ve never encountered anything like this during customization before.

Follow-up on my previous reply: The margin dimensions of the social media icons don’t change anymore on the post/static pages, but the margins of the links on the navigation menu and the mail icon image still do.

Here are screenshots, in case it changes again by the time you check my page (I’m pretty sure the margin of the links on the navigation menu of the static page was already the same as the one on the home page, until I refreshed it around 5 minutes ago).

Hello, any updates please? Mods? :/

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry but Staff have a considerable backlog of threads tagged for their attention that were tagged for help prior to this one being tagged. They work through them in chronological order based on datestamps and timestamps by working their way forward from the earliest to the most recent.

How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.

Please don’t bump your thread here again by posting into it because it’s not in your best interest to post to it again after it has been tagged for Staff help. Thread bumping moves the timestamps forward and it takes longer to get a response.

    Hi Erika,

I just wanted to let you know that we’re looking into this issue for you. Thanks for your patience. We’ll get to the bottom of the problem with your social networking buttons.

One of us will be in touch soon. Thanks much.

@timethief: My apologies, I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the info.

    @thatrobyn
: Thank you! Will be looking forward to your response.

    Erika,

We’ve done a ton of testing so far…seems like this may be a little bug specific to the front page of your Adelle-themed site. I’m going to create a ticket for your theme’s developer and see if we can get assistance to clear it up.

We’ll get back to you as soon as we have a solution!

I noticed that too, but what I really don’t get is how this problem just suddenly occurred when I didn’t change anything in my custom CSS. Does that mean there’s no problem on my end?

Oh and by the way, is it okay if I temporarily change the Genericons to images of the icons, or will that affect the troubleshooting of my issue?

    Thanks again, Robyn!

    Erika,

I agree…we’re stumped about the sudden change, which is why we’ve gotten the developers involved. They’ll figure out the issue.

I think it’s be great if you adjust those Genericons. I was going to suggest it, but didn’t want to mess with your aesthetics, if you only wanted those old ones. I’ll let the developers know you’ve done this. In the meantime, we have taken screenshots of the non-working widgets for the developers to see.

Thanks for your patience, and the mystery to solve :)

Alright then, I will be replacing it with images of the working icons by tomorrow instead. Thanks for letting the developers know! I’ll keep the screenshots I took (links above) online for your reference, too, just in case they’ll be of any use.

Hope to hear from you again soon! Good luck. :)

    Erika,

Just wanted to let you know that your ticket is in the theme developer’s queue! Hopefully, we’ll have an answer for you shortly :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for the update!

Hello! I just want to inform you that the icons suddenly reappeared right after I tried replacing it with image files of my own. A few hours ago some of the icons still refused to appear as it had for days now, but when I tried replacing the Facebook icon with an image, the rest of the icons appeared (so I trashed my own image and went back to the Genericons configuration).

It should be noted that the Twitter and Mail Envelope Genericons appearing on separate posts/pages still differ from the ones displayed on the home page, though. Here are screenshots for reference purposes:

    Erika,

Very interesting. I wonder if your theme’s developer has been working on the issue, and that’s why you’re seeing some changes.

I’ve added your observations and your screenshots (thanks for those) to your ticket. Those will help.

    Thanks much!
