Missing ‘Home’ page template so can’t navigate to ‘Home’

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

Thank you for your previous help on navigation. =)

I am now trying to navigate to ‘Home’ but can’t seem to change it at the top despite having picked a ‘Home’ template.

Is there something missing on my account?

    Thank you.

    Hi there:

It sounds like you need to add a “Home” link to your menu. Here’s a guide that will help you walk through how to add links to your existing menu:

    https://wordpress.com/support/menus/add-links-to-a-menu/

    I hope that helps!

    Hi

I have gone through the guide. I have linked it but it takes on the name on the top of the page ‘Come with me’ rather than ‘Home’ – when I select it from the drop down list on the navigation choices.

I have then gone on to change the theme hoping it would help- but it still won’t show as the ‘Home’ page on the navigation/menu and will only be linked as ‘Home’ if I physically name my homepage as ‘Home’.

Is this right? Do I have to name the homepage ‘Home’ to have it link as ‘Home’ on the navigation panels?

    Thank you.

  • Hi there,

I don’t see a menu on your site when I look currently. However, it is possible to give your page title one name, and the menu tab a different name.

Please set up a menu on your site again (or switch back to your previous theme, which may recover the menu you had previously) and once it is there we can show you how to update the text in the menu only, but leave the page title as-is.

    Thanks!

    Hi

Thank you so much for coming back!

I’ve updated my page with the navigation tab now so hopefully you can view it now. =)

I don’t have a menu yet although when I last created it with the previous theme, I did create it, so perhaps it just transferred over. This theme seems very different with lots more options than the previous one.

    So my questions/ asks are:

Firstly, I would like the navigation to be on the top- and not duplicated but at the moment I have no idea how to do that.

Secondly, it would be great if I could change the ‘untitled’ navigation to ‘Home’.

And thirdly and lastly, also, to have the navigation appear on each page- Blog, About, Contact.

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi

I think I figured it out!!! Omg!!! Thank you.

I just have one last request re navigation, naming etc.

How do I remove the ‘page title’ of ‘contact’ as it’s being duplicated on the site but if I don’t have the title- then on the list of pages, it is untitled so a bit tricky for me to go in and edit?

    Many thanks.

  • Hi again,

Awesome! I can confirm that you have named the tab as “Home” in your menu, although the Homepage itself is untitled and the title field is left blank at this time.

How do I remove the ‘page title’ of ‘contact’ as it’s being duplicated on the site but if I don’t have the title- then on the list of pages, it is untitled so a bit tricky for me to go in and edit?

I see that in addition to the page title, you have manually added the text “Contact” as well. It is possible to edit the page template itself (the starting point all pages use) to remove the page title. This will however have the effect of removing the title from all pages.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to edit the template. You will note in the video I am starting first by editing the “contact” page itself, and the option to edit the template is in the sidebar.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/84YEh2

Note that if you decide to go this route, you will need to remember to add titles to your other pages (manually) as they will not show the title you enter in the page settings.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Hi

Thank you so much for the help.

I went in and did as in your video the ‘Contact’ page and was successful.

Then I went in to amend the header- as the logo and the site title seemed repetitive. And that amended well but since then, the amend to the site title seems to have messed up the menu. It now has dropped the ‘Blog’ and ‘About’ page despite it being linked on the menu section.

I have even gone in to delete and re-create it and yet it still won’t show the full set of menu.

    Help on this?

Oh and also help on renaming my homepage on the list of pages as it is still currently untitled (still haven’t figured out how to do this)?

Many thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

    Hi again

Been playing around- went into Editor as that was where I edited the header to see on the list that there were 3 Navigation- found the right one and it seems to have restored the links.

Not sure how the extra navigations were created and I can’t seem to delete them through the Editor.

However, the same issue has now popped up again whereby the ‘Home’ is again ‘Untitled’ as I still don’t know how to get around that.

So perhaps if I just make sure the ‘Untitled’ becomes ‘Home’ that would solve all the problems?

Also, very curiously, the Menu still shows the same. How does the menu link to the navigation? How do I find that strand?

    Thanks again.

    Hi

I’ve solved that and it’s Home again. =)

I just have one last question- how do I remove the 3 Navigations I have created from the previous theme?

    Many thanks.

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure exactly what you mean, can you tell us more about what you are seeing? What is the URL of the page you are on, we would like to visit directly and see if we see the same thing as you do.

What are the names of the 3 menus, do you see those as well? It will help for us to have those in mind so we know what we are looking for.

    Thanks for the additional info!

    Hi

    Apologies for the delay.

    The URL is https://mamamadewhole.wordpress.com

The 3 menus are: Home, Blog, About, Contact.

My issue is when I go into ‘Pages’, my Home on the menu page is still ‘Untitled’. How do I rename it to ‘Home’?

    Many thanks.

  • My issue is when I go into ‘Pages’, my Home on the menu page is still ‘Untitled’. How do I rename it to ‘Home’?

Normally the easiest way to do that when you’re looking at ‘Pages’ is:

    1. Click on your untitled ‘Home’ page to open it in the editor
    2. You should see a light-grey text “Add title” at the top, when the Home page is open in the editor – click on that, and type Home
    3. Click the “Update” button in the top right corner of the editor

That should do it; once you go back to ‘Pages’ after that, your Home page should be titled as such.

    Hi

I have tried this but I don’t actually want the word ‘Home’ at the top of the page. I want the ‘Add Title’ to remain Blank but then just want the page to appear as ‘Home’ on the list of pages.

    Many thanks.

  • Actually, I’m not too sure it will – I had a look at the home page layout as it is now and I don’t see any ‘assigned’ space for the page title to appear on the page at the moment.

That should follow from what staff-totoro mentioned before:

Note that if you decide to go this route, you will need to remember to add titles to your other pages (manually) as they will not show the title you enter in the page settings.
