missing out on powerpoint
-
Hi, guys!
I’ve search the forums regarding the inclusion of ppt. It seems to me that it is not possible to embed it. But i have just recently upgraded my blog to 10 gig and it says in the editor that i can upload such file as ppt. I tried to upload it to no avail. Am I missing out on something? Kindly help me. Thanks in adavance!

I’m not sure, but I doubt that wordpress has any built-in viewer for powerpoint files, but here are a few basics worth remembering:
(1) Be sure the file you wish to upload is one of these file types – pdf, doc, ppt.
(2) Do not use anything in the file name except letters and numbers; no spaces, no punctuation no dashes or underscores, or other special characters except for the dot between the file name and the extension. Also make sure the file name has an extension.
(3) The maximum size for a single file upload is around 8mb without the space upgrade. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/09/09/how-big-a-file-can-i-upload/ With the space upgrade, the maximum single file size you can upload is about 75mb. If you need more storage space, you can see the options in the “upgrades” page in your dashboard. -

Look at #2 in my post above. Rename your file with letters and numbers only and make sure it has an extension (.ppt)Also, here is a good FAQ that talks about how to get powerpoint presentations up and running http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/04/19/slidesharenet-slideshows/

Thanks for helping out. I tried to take away the dash sign in the file name and simply name it inc.ppt. When I tried to preview the post, what appear is just a hyperlink so viewers may download the file. Is it just this? Can’t they view the ppt on the page itself?
Thanks

I’ve got a power point issue of my own. The file is large at 78 MB, but I did purchase the space upgrade, and when I tried a test with a much smaller .ppt file, I had the same result. I have successfully uploaded the .ppt, and sent the link to the editor, but when I go the post and click on the .ppt file link, it just takes me to another copy of the post, not to the power point. The post is located here:

If someone can take a look and see what I’m talking about, I’d appreciate it. I purchased the upgrade pretty much solely to host this .ppt and send the link to friends and family, and I put a lot of work into the presentation, so I’d really like to get it up and running.

The link is to the post page instead of the ppt file. What you need to do, is get the URL for the ppt file by going to manage > uploads, click on the ppt and a window will come up with the URL. copy the URL to your clipboard.
Go to the post and open it for editing, click on the “code” tab and then where it has the URL for the page, replace that with the URL to the ppt file. Make sure that you do not delete or overwrite the quote marks at each end of the ppt URL.

Thanks so much for the input, but I think I need another point in the right direction. I did as thesacredpath suggested, and am no longer having the same problem, but when I click the link on the post I get an error message that says “something went wrong – error 505” and then it goes to a screen telling me something is wrong with the servers. Is this just a file size problem?

A 78mb file is quite large, and it could very well be the problem. I know it’s probably not your first choice, but is there a way to logically break it up into say maybe 10 sections? Even for a download 78mb is quite substantial, in the realm of a medium-sized computer program.

I reduced the size of the file by about half, and it works now. I very much appreciate everyone’s help.
