Missing Scheduled Posts

  • Unknown's avatar

Lately my posts keep getting missed and not posted. I can find answers for wordpress.org for this occurrence, cut not for users of wordpress.com.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Scheduled posts don’t actually post on the scheduled time, but are triggered by the first visit to your blog on or after the scheduled time. The only advice I can give you is, if you have a post scheduled, to visit your blog (via your phone, even, if you’re not close to a computer) just after the scheduled time to make sure the post is triggered.

I have had my blog for six years, and this has never ever happened until now, when it has happened for the last 3 nights in a row.

  • Did you schedule them using the New Post button in the Reader, or the dashboard editor at Posts ->Add New in your main dashboard?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t actually even know what is meant by the Reader. I use Posts, Add New and then schedule a date and time.

  • I don’t know what could be causing this. I’ve tagged this thread for staff to follow up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting.

    Thank you for your help!

Still happening. I’m wondering, could my blog have been hacked maybe?

  • Let’s see what staff says.

I must also point out that these threads are addressed by staff based on the timestamps, so if we keep posting after the thread has been tagged can actually cause you a delay in getting help.

That said, if you suspect your blog has been hacked it might be a good idea to update your password, both for WordPress.com and for your email. Instructions to change your WordPress.com password here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/passwords/

    Hi @rhapsodyinbooks,

I don’t think your blog has been hacked. Could you provide the following info so I can investigate a bit more?

Thanks for the additional information here!

The non scheduling now happens daily. I usually set them to post about 1 a.m. First I get a “missed schedule” message, and then, if I don’t change it, I will eventually see that it is scheduled to post some 5-6 hours later. (I have never waited to see if this would actually happen. The minute I see it was missed, I go in, change the time to a minute or two hence, and update. It then posts at that new time.) These posts were originally created using the Classic Editor, and have been made from 2-6 weeks in advance. But even for those made way in advance, I generally go back into the post the week before and make revisions, and then hit Update. It is possible that these most recent posts were updated using the New Editor, because it was a week or so before I figured out I had the option to change back to Classic style, but I can’t swear on that.

    Hi!

Thanks for the additional info. There are some issues with the schedule post function in the new editor causing the posts not to publish. We’re working on resolving those. It looks like you have a post scheduled to go up tomorrow. Can you try updating the post from the classic editor here?

    https://rhapsodyinbooks.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=27261&action=edit

Just make sure the time is correct and click “Update”. I’m hoping that updating the post from the classic editor will prevent the issue from occurring. Please let me know if you experience success with the post scheduling!

My post today went live at the scheduled time. This is the first time that happened since I reported the problem. I guess I will go back through and click update on all other prescheduled posts. Thank you.

Great! I’m glad we at least got this working. So, it appears that this is an issue with scheduling posts from the new editor. I’ve passed this along! Please let me know if you run into any additional trouble.

I just switched to the new posting editor from the classic version. I had a couple of issues that maybe someone can answer. I selected “Schedule Post” and selected a time for the next day. The blue button below changed to “Schedule”. Made multiple saves of my draft. When I finally hit “Schedule” it posted my post immediately! Ugh……..
Also, typically once I have a title for my blog post, a shortlink is added to the “Custom Message” section, but this did not happen in the new improved editor. Was this taken out?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is noiretropicalbeauty.com.

As far as I know, scheduling and Publicize are still not working correctly from the new editor. For now, you’ll need to use the classic editor if you want to use those features.

You can subscribe to this thread to stay updated with fixes to that editor as they happen: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/new-post-editor-improvements?replies=5

    @noiretropicalbeauty
I switched back to the classical editor. Then I went through the posts I had made with the new editor and made some nothing little change, like a minute difference in the schedule for posting, and updated it (always now in the classical mode) and it seemed to solve the problem. (I don’t know if just updating without changing anything would have fixed the situation, but I didn’t want to take any chances!)

    @noiretropicalbeauty

I selected “Schedule Post” and selected a time for the next day. The blue button below changed to “Schedule”. Made multiple saves of my draft. When I finally hit “Schedule” it posted my post immediately!

Currently, the new editor schedules the post based on local time whereas the classic editor schedules posts based on the timezone set under Settings -> General. So, if you’re setting a time for your post that is actually in the past based on the timezone set under Settings -> General, the post will be published automatically. Does that make sense?

As a workaround right now, scheduling your posts from the classic editor should alleviate this issue.

Also, typically once I have a title for my blog post, a shortlink is added to the “Custom Message” section, but this did not happen in the new improved editor. Was this taken out?

The shortlink won’t appear in the sharing box. However, the link will appear by default. So, although you don’t see it in the preview, it should be there. Can you confirm that it’s showing up when the post gets publicized?

    Hi @jeremylduvall
    Thanks for your response!

Yes, my shortlink does appear when my post is pushed to Twitter, FB, etc. I have gone back to the classic view and I had no problems scheduling posts.

So what you are saying is that the new editor posts based on the current (computer) time, and the classic posts based on the time set in my Settings. I have my time set to the current time. Plus I was scheduling for the next day, so I am not sure why the new editor would still post immediately.

    Thanks.

    NTB

    Hi NTB,

Thanks for the additional details. Your summary of the scheduling time from the new editor and classic editor is correct. I’m not sure why the post is immediately publishing. I haven’t been able to reproduce this, but I’m still trying.

I’m glad the classic editor is working correctly for scheduled posts. Thanks for your patience on this!
