Missing second row in visual editor and no toolbar toggle in right hand menu

I do not have the second row in the visual editor toolbar, and I also don’t have a toolbar toggle option. What’s wrong and how can I fix this?

Are you using the Classic Editor or the Classic Block?

Above is the Classic Editor and below is the Classic Block. In both the Toggle button appears for me in Firefox latest. In the full Block Editor’s Paragraph block, there is no toggle button.

If you don’t see that, please share a screenshot of what you do see.

This is what I see when I highlight the text in a paragraph.

    See if this works.

    Hi @daves1001,

Thank you for sharing this screenshot!

Would you mind sharing what features from the toolbar you believe you’re missing?

I’ve taken a look at your screenshot, and this looks correct to me. This is your top toolbar; you’re welcome to keep this here, or if you’d like to remove it and have the toolbar appear over the blocks directly instead, you’re welcome to change this.

To do this, you can click the three dots next to the “Save” button and click “Top Toolbar.”

Additionally, you can learn more about the toolbar here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/customize-blocks/#block-toolbar.

Please let me know if you have any more questions on this!

Yes, I am missing INDENT. If I click on Classic Editor, a toolbar appears at the end of the post, which is not helpful. I would like to use the Classic Editor exclusively because it offers more options.

What your screenshot shows is the toolbar of the Paragraph block in the Block editor.

There is no Toggle button to make more buttons appear in that toolbar. Instead there is a drop down menu (More) that will appear when clicking the down arrow at the right end of the toolbar

Regardless, there is no INDENT option in the Paragraph block toolbar.

If you want to use the Classic Editor exclusively, then note the following:

    • On existing WordPress.com websites, you must start a new post from the Posts Dashboard by clicking on the down arrow next to “Add Post” and selecting the Classic Editor. (See image here)
    • New websites registered since about February this year do not have a Classic Editor option. (Source)

Thanks for the reply. There is no easy way to indent text with the editor I am using.

So, I take it there is no way to use the Classic Editor for an existing post?

Not if it was created with the full Block Editor>Paragraph block.

If you prefer the Classic Editor, have you tried using the Classic block I mentioned above? It pretty much preserves the toolbar from the full Classic Editor including the indent.

Thanks for sharing this approach @2020testjj!

@daves1001, you can definitely use the Classic block if you need to use the classic Indent function. I have recorded a visual walkthrough for you here: https://share.cleanshot.com/X5mHPjVh

Let me know if you have other questions.

Thank you. That works, but indenting paragraphs that are already written requires some cutting and pasting. Next time I write a blog post I’ll use the Classic Editor from the start. Why is that not the default?

  • Thanks for sharing that feedback!

The Classic Editor isn’t the default because the newer Block Editor is designed to offer more flexibility and modern features for building different types of content. Still, many people prefer the Classic Editor for its straightforward layout, and it’s completely fine to keep using it if that works better for you.

Seems like WP should have simply licensed the MS Word editor rather than reinventing the wheel.
