MISSING THEMES IN DASHBOARD

  I’m downloading themes from WordPress.com onto desktop. I unzip theme then FTP them to the correct directory wp-content/ themes. the FTP shows the files to be there. However, when I go to the WordPress dashboard all I can see are the two basic themes that come with WP and none of the uploaded themes.
  It’s driving me mad – there are very few solutions on a Google search and I have run through the forums on here by about 50 pages until blinded!
  Can anyone offer a treasonable stab at why this is happening. I’m not very technical so would appreciate a non jargony answer if possible.

  not the wordpress.COM forums
  see the sticky at the top of the forum.
