Missing tool buttons–Annotum Base

  • Unknown's avatar

Missing tool buttons for writing articles in Annotum Base theme. Have used the theme for years, now suddenly most of the functionality is lost. The buttons are not visible unless you roll the mouse over them and even then they don’t work. I’ve tried FireFox, Chrome, IE, nothing works. Very frustrating for my newsletter authors who can no longer insert images or references.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I cannot locate that theme here > http://wordpress.com/themes/ any more and that’s because it is a retired theme https://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/happy-retirement/

Themes are retired when they no longer support all WordPress.com features.

This is who the theme was for > Google Knols Move to WordPress: The Annotum Platform http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/google-knol-wordpress-annotum/

If you used the theme on your blog previously you can still use it but it’s not available for new blogs. If you can load that theme then you can change the appearance the same way we can on way other theme. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable custom and CSS editing:

Yes, you are right the theme is no longer available to new users, but I have been using if for years on wordpress.com without any problems– until just recently that is. Something happened that resulted in a significant loss of functionality in just the last few months. If going “premium” would bring back the functionality, I would go that route. But, I don’t know that I would get the functionality back. I don’t know why it suddenly changed. If I can get that answered, I’ll have a better idea how to proceed.

Going premium would make no difference at all. I’ll tag this thread for a Themes Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

I’m not sure which buttons you’re referring to but I’d like to investigate.

First, could you describe specifically what the buttons allowed you to do?

Next, could you please upload a screenshot of the buttons once you roll over them so I can see what you’re referring to?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks.

Thanks for trying to help. I uploaded a before and an after image. You will see that most of the buttons are not visible. I’ve highlighted the reference tool, but we can’t use images or many of the other features.

  • Thanks very much for the screenshots. Now I see that you are using a special Visual Editor that is displayed in a separate Articles custom post type, not Posts.

I’m going to bring this issue to our developers to see if there’s anything we can do for this retired theme, and I’ll keep you posted here.

Thank you. I am a college professor using the newsletter with a few colleagues in about six different courses this semester. Our students are the authors. We’ve been using this newsletter with our students each semester for years and hate to lose such a wonderful tool.

  • I’ve spoken with our developers about the Annotum series – Annotum Base and Annotum Sans. Here’s the scoop:

In April 2014, WordPress version 3.9 updated the TinyMCE Visual Editor integrated in the post editor. This meant that the custom implementation of TinyMCE in Annotum’s Articles custom post type was no longer compatible with WordPress.

The Annotum series is no longer being developed for WordPress.com: both themes were retired in 2011, and making the themes’ custom implementation of TinyMCE compatible with newer versions of the WordPress Visual Editor is not on the radar, as it would require major development work.

You have a couple of options:

    – if you want to preserve your articles but switch to a different theme, you could convert the articles to posts, via the “convert to post” button in the article editor
    – you could consider a self-hosted WordPress site running Annotum, which is maintained on Github here: https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum

If you need further help along the way, just let me know. I’m glad you’ve found the theme useful over the years and am sorry I couldn’t share better news.

The ‘Insert image’ icon in ‘Articles’ is no longer available in Annotum and therefore I cannot edit.

Would you please confirm this is the case or otherwise.

My Articles are still accessible to web viewers according to the daily statistics dat . Will this web access facility to viewers continue to operate?

  • Frank – please have a look at my previous post. Certain formatting buttons are no longer working in Annotum, and I’ve explained why and what your options are.

For now, all content in themes running Annotum remain visible to site visitors, but I’d encourage you to look at one of the options I provided in my previous reply.

I’ll keep my current Articles until they are no longer available to viewers. And thereafter perhaps set up a Github self hosted WordPress site running Annotum.

You mention ‘Navigate to the wp-content/themes directory in your WordPress installation’.

Where in my Dashboard can I find this?

  • You mention ‘Navigate to the wp-content/themes directory in your WordPress installation’.

The Github instructions explain how to set up the theme on a self-hosted WordPress installation on your own host, so they aren’t relevant to WordPress.com. You’ll find a guide to installing themes on a self-hosted installation of WordPress here here:

If you need further help setting up a self-hosted installation when the time comes, feel free to post in the WordPress.org support forums:
