Missingf emojis
-
This is strange! Back in January 2019, I imported my blogger blog into WordPress. There were quite a few posts (over 3000) and it took me ages to review them all to ensure that everything looked right. Apart from a few text alignment issues and a few missing images – the import was pretty much perfect! 👍… and has been since then
However, in the past few months a few visitors have reported ‘question marks’ (?) appearing on their own amongst the Posts’ text. On closer inspection, the question marks seem to have replaced MOST (not all) of any emojis I’ve used in the posts. I thought it was just a few posts and began re-editing the more recent ones to bring back the emojis. But today, I realised it’s pretty much ALL my posts going back to when I first imported the Blog in January 2019.
This is a recent issue but I can’t be precise about when the problem first began. Has there been a change somewhere on how emojis are handled?
I tend to invoke emojis via the Windows key followed by the period (.) rather than a dedicated WP Plugin and wondered if that may be relevant?
So, it’s a big problem for me as I now have probably thousands of posts that now look ‘untidy’ and are confusing to my readers. I’m less fussed about WHAT caused it (but if anyone knows, then I’m listening) and more interested if I can bulk erase these question marks without having to visit each post individually? Thanks, Steve

Hi there Steve,
I haven’t heard of any emoji-related changes, but I would be happy to look further into this for you. Can you provide the URL of a page or post where emojis are missing?
We’ll take a look and try to pinpoint what changed.
Thanks!

Thanks. My url is
https://stevepalmertheblogger.comThey tend to be single ‘?’ at the end of sentences/paragraph where the emoji used to be. From more research this end, I have deduced that it’s not a particular emoji that is the problem – it seems to be ANY emoji invoked using the ‘Win’ + ‘.’ key. Interestingly, I’m pretty sure that everything WAS OK about six weeks – so *something* has happened in that time.
I have also (again) disabled all my plugins, (but, in truth, I don’t think it’s a plugin issue) as I haven’t changed anything/added anytihng in a long time. Instinctively, it feels like a database issue (but that’s well above my paygrade!) :)
There are hundreds of not thousands of Posts where this has happened. A few examples are…

https://stevepalmertheblogger.com/the-look-of-kilworth
https://stevepalmertheblogger.com/2019/12/25/christmas-2019
Please note that now I have re-edited most posts from 2021 and 2022, and added the emojis back in (a big job!!!). If you are looking for even more examples, the best YEAR to look at is anything from 2020 (or before) because I’ve haven’t gotten around to re-editing those. The problem seemed to start from posts from January 2019. Prior to that, my blog content was imported from Blogger and that used ‘different’ emojis (they all seem to be intact) Thanks, in advance, Steve

Hello there,
https://stevepalmertheblogger.com/ isn’t hosted with WordPress.com so we are unable to help with this site, but we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.
Missing emoji’s and similar could be the result of a missing font file.
I would reach out to the theme developers for help in getting that fixed/replaced.
I hope this helps.

Hi!
Thanks for your help.
Yes, it’s hosted by IONOS, my Webhost as a ‘hosted WordPress site’. Should I talking to them too?
Interesting point re ‘missing font file’. Why would it ‘go missing’? Just to confirm, the emojis were displaying OK around 6 weeks ago and AFAIK there has been no changes to the theme.

I doubt IONOS would be able to help you here as they would be most concerned with site downtime mostly.

It could be a case whereby the the theme needs an update in accordance to routine WordPress updates. :)

Thanks for this… it’s made me think! I’ll send a message to the Theme developers
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
