Mistake in Changing from Uncategorized to a Erroneous Titled Slug

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been searching for this answer for several days on the internet to no avail. I website as to how to remove ‘Uncategorized’ to an existing Category and, made a mistake. How can I have all 19-posts changed to the correct category, thus all slug titles will be the same for all 19-posts? My site is mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com Thank you!

  • Hi @mabuhayusveterans, no worries. You should be able to edit the category here:

    supernovia:

    Thanks for your response.

When I switched from Uncategorized, I didn’t realize that I should first create a new Category Name and, instead I clicked on “Taxes” which now shows on all 19-posts. So, what I did is created a new Category titled “Blog”, which is what I wish to have listed in place of “Uncategorized”. The downside, is that no matter what I do to try and switch all 19-posts from the title “Taxes” to “Blog” on this page https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category it (currently shows “Taxes”) and this page shows the word “Taxes” moved off center to the right of where all the other Categories are listed to the left. If you notice in the far “Right Column” it shows “19” and, that is the number of the posts that I have on my site. Additionally, on the “Archive Category Heading” it shows “Taxes”, when in reality it should show “Blog” too.

As you may surmise, I am elderly (70+ years young) and, I don’t know what I am supposed to do. Is it possible to give me step-by-step written instructions as to how to fix my problem or am I stuck with the mistake that I made. I have become so frustrated that I even thought of starting all over again…disabling my site. I have all of my posts saved on an External Hard Drive to re-upload but, still thought it might be best (for the first time ever) to post a question and see what type of feedback I may receive.

    Thanks!

  • The downside, is that no matter what I do to try and switch all 19-posts from the title “Taxes” to “Blog” on this page https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category it (currently shows “Taxes”)

That page is used to edit categories themselves, not to assign posts to categories. So if you wanted to edit the “Taxes” category and change it to “Blog”, this would be the right page.

But as both those categories already exist you can’t edit them in this case. Instead, you need to reassign the posts, and that’s done from the posts page:

    https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

Select all the posts, and click Bulk Actions ->Edit. That will allow you to remove Taxes and add Blog to all the posts at once. You can also do this one post at a time from inside the editor itself.

and this page shows the word “Taxes” moved off center to the right of where all the other Categories are listed to the left.

Categories can be arranged in a hierarchy, and in this case you have “Taxes” added as a sub-category of “Blog”. Click the Edit link under Taxes on the categories page, and un-set “Blog” as the parent category:

    https://d.pr/i/KDWaCM

Set the parent to “None” to have “Taxes” on the same level as all your other categories. Then update.

    kokkieh,

I am having trouble understanding your response. When I click on https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php I check off everything from top to bottom (correct)? If so, nothing happened.

I then decided to just go ahead and delete “Taxes” and on this page https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php, when I click on the word “Blog” and then apply, I am redirected to this page https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?s&post_status=all&post_type=post&action=-1&doaction=Apply&m=0&cat=273&paged=1&action2=-1 which doesn’t make much sense to me.

If I backspace, then of course, I am taken right back to where I started with all that was shown before.

Also, if I go to this page: https://d.pr/i/KDWaCM I am directed to this page: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/term.php?taxonomy=category&tag_ID=4517&post_type=post&wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit-tags.php%3Ftaxonomy%3Dcategory and I follow your instructions, clicking on “Update” and am referred to this page: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php

So, as you can see, I am greatly confused as to what I am being told.

    Thanks.

    kokkieh,

One other thing that I forgot to mention to you in my previous response, prior to my deleting the Tax Post, I attempted to go to https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/term.php?taxonomy=category&tag_ID=4517&post_type=post&wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit-tags.php%3Ftaxonomy%3Dcategory and I follow your instructions, clicking on “Update” and still received the same answer as well.

What gets me is I am the Administrator of my own site, so who am I supposed to get a higher level of permission from?

Once again, sorry for bothering you but, thought I would provide this clarification to you. (NOTE: Before I even published my question last night, I tried what you asked of me in this final segment and was still getting the same response as well. That’s when I decided it might be correct to ask a question and see where this all leads to.)

    Thanks.

    Macmanx,

Sorry for getting back with you late, as the internet has been working exceptionally poor to non-existent here in the Philippines for the past 5-months (due to the Pandemic).

I did follow your instructions and believe it or not, everything worked as expected.

    So, I appreciate your response.

By the way, I guess you can consider this issue closed.

I do have another issue with the title (Taxes) that I deleted the night before last and now that I have re-posted it, it shows on: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php that the word “Taxes” is invalid and unsure what needs to be done to correct this. It does correctly show on https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php as a new Post with “Blog” as its Category. So, am unsure what is wrong and just googled it and I was re-directed to someone else (https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/why-are-my-menu-options-invalid/) that had a similar issue a while back and the response was that an indiviudual said that they would look into it and correct it.

So, if I need to ask a separate question to this last item, please be so kind as to contact me, informing me that this is the correct route to take.

    Thanks!

  • it shows on: https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php that the word “Taxes” is invalid and unsure what needs to be done to correct this

The “Taxes” item in your menu is for a blog post that has since been deleted. So that menu link is linking to content that no longer exists.

Edit your menu and delete that item. Then click on Add New ->Posts, and select the current post titled Taxes.

However, please keep in mind that a site menu is not intended to serve as an index of all posts on your site. Posts appear in your site’s feed, with the most recent one always appearing first, so are intended for regular updates, like a news feed, that people can subscribe to.

The menu is intended to list your pages – pieces of permanent content that you want visitors to be able to easily find at any time.

If you add all your posts to the menu, over time that will break your site, as it will lead to a massive amount of data that has to be downloaded every time someone opens your site, so it’s not something I’d recommend.

    Kokkieh,

    Thanks for your response.

I followed your instructions and the menu is now looking like it should.

In reference to your final thought, would you suggest that I just go ahead and delete all the posts from the Menu Page, thus the site won’t break down as you mentioned? (NOTE: I was under the impression that if they weren’t listed, then those same posts might disappear from my site.) If so, I can take care of that as soon as I receive a response back from yourself.

Please note, I am a Retired U.S. Air Force Vietnam Era Veteran and, my blog site is only for Veterans seeking information, as to what it takes to make a permanent move to the Philippines. As it stands now, what posts are indicated in the Menu Section “possibly won’t increase in number” BUT, the content may increase or decrease within those posts.

So, I will honor whatever thoughts that you may have in mind.

    Thanks again for everything!

  • Hi there,

would you suggest that I just go ahead and delete all the posts from the Menu Page, thus the site won’t break down as you mentioned?

No, @kokkieh wasn’t suggesting that. He suggested to not add all your posts in your menu as this will slow things down.

Right now you have a couple of dozen posts in your menu and that isn’t causing any issues.

    fstat,

    Thanks for the response.

Then, lets consider this article closed.

Thanks again for all of your help, as it was very much appreciated.
